plain weave variation with supplementary weft: silk

What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a heavily worn textile fragment mounted on a plain light ground, dominated by two broad vertical bands in a mellow golden-brown or caramel hue. Each band carries a repeating woven motif in off-white ivory thread: pairs of stylized birds shown in profile and facing each other, with dotted bodies and elongated necks, alternating with small symmetrical palmette or vessel shapes with curling tendrils. Between and flanking these bands are narrow vertical stripes in muted teal-blue and cream with a tiny zigzag or chevron weave, now very fragmentary and torn. The edges of the cloth are irregular, frayed and lacunary, with cracks, losses and loose threads exposing the white backing. The surface looks like aged silk, matte with a faint residual sheen on the pattern wefts. Even, top light with no strong shadows emphasizes the soft contrast between the warm ground and the pale figures and reveals the minute scale of the weave. The overall scale appears small, a remnant of a once larger luxury cloth, presented like an archaeological relic.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the two brown columns from top to bottom and see how the mirrored birds repeat rhythmically. Then look closely at the fragile teal zigzag stripes that divide them to appreciate the weaving structure. Finally notice the torn edges and losses, where absence becomes part of the design.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a silk fragment with striped pattern dated to the 900s and attributed to Syria, maker unknown. The technique is recorded as plain weave variation with supplementary weft in silk, a method used for luxury fabrics in the early Islamic period. No precise findspot or original function is documented; it was probably part of a garment or furnishing textile. Paired birds and geometric bands were common motifs in eastern Mediterranean and Central Asian weaving at that time. The work entered the collection through purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund.

Curious detailDato curioso

In supplementary-weft silks like this one, the ivory pattern is not printed but woven in, with extra weft threads carried across the plain weave ground to create the figural design.

I look at this 10th century silk fragment attributed to Syria and its fragility holds my attention. I see two wide bands in golden ochre with paired birds woven in ivory thread, with dotted bodies and long necks, separated by small vegetal motifs. At the sides there are narrow teal and cream stripes with a very worn zigzag. The edges are frayed, with tears and missing areas that reveal the backing. The technique is tabby with supplementary weft, and the soft sheen of the silk is still visible under even light.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What draws me is how this textile organizes space like a celestial map. The two ochre bands work as steady vertical stripes and on them the confronted birds repeat with precise rhythm, almost like symmetrical constellations separated by small central emblems. The side stripes in teal and cream with zigzag frame the whole like coordinates. Although fragmented and frayed, you can sense a geometric order meant to repeat endlessly, typical of a luxury fabric that perhaps clothed a person or dressed an important space.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old and torn little blanket with twin birds. I see two light brown paths and on each one there are two white birds nose to nose, with long necks and dots on their bellies. Between them there are little flowers or little vases. On the sides there are blue and cream stripes shaped like zigzags that are very faded. The edges are all frayed and full of little holes, and you can see the white backing underneath. I like to imagine the little birds are saying hello to each other.
