The Castle with Two TowersEl castillo de las dos torres

etching
What you would seeLo que verías
A small horizontal etching in black ink on warm, aged, cream-colored paper, surrounded by a pale blank margin and a thin frame line with slightly rounded corners. More than half of the image is sky, rendered with fine horizontal hatching and soft, looping lines that suggest slow-moving clouds. Below, in the middle distance and slightly to the right, rises a compact castle with two tall, round, stone-textured towers with pointed roofs, small windows, and a crenellated edge. Around them cluster smaller buildings with steep roofs, walls, an arched gateway, and to the right another towered house among trees. A river or moat stretches across the foreground, its surface built from short, calm strokes. On the left, a wooden bridge leads toward the castle; on the far bank, two tiny riders on horseback approach, while in the nearest lower-left corner two standing men wearing tall hats and carrying staffs walk with a slender dog. In the lower right, a small boat with a draped, flag-like sail or cloth carries dark, crouching figures beneath a leafy arch. Dense shrubs fill the front edge. A tall, dark, windswept tree closes the composition on the right, balancing the lighter trees on the left. The overall scale feels quiet, miniature, and remote.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the huge sky, then drop down to the two towers that anchor the center. From there, look for the human scale in the lower left and the boat in the lower right. The large tree on the right acts as a dark curtain and makes the castle feel farther away.
ContextContexto
According to its source record, this print is The Castle with Two Towers, an etching dated 1616, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art and credited as a Gift of The Print Club of Cleveland. It is listed under the Dutch artist Jan van de Velde. One inconsistency must be noted: the source gives his life dates as 1620–1662, which would make a work from 1616 impossible, so that part of the record should be treated with caution. Whether this is a real castle or an imagined one is not stated in the source; it is probably a composed landscape, very much in the Dutch 17th-century taste for calm river views with fortified architecture.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual fact: more than half the image is sky, yet it is not empty. Almost every inch is worked with fine horizontal lines and faint cloud curves, so the stillness itself is drawn, line by line.

- Is this castle a place of protection, of power, or mainly a pretext for looking at a landscape?¿Este castillo es un lugar de protección, de poder, o solo un pretexto para mirar un paisaje?

I pause at the warm cream paper, with its clear margin and aged edge that speaks of time. The thin line framing the scene, with slightly rounded corners, holds a very controlled black ink. Above, more than half is sky made with extremely fine horizontal hatching and curved clouds. Below, the castle with two round towers shows its stony texture, pointed roofs and crenellated top, while the river in front, the wooden bridge and the dense shrubs hold the composition together with short, calm strokes.

What captivates me most is that huge sky covering more than half the print. It is not empty, it is woven with horizontal lines and curved strokes suggesting slow clouds, as if the air itself were moving. Below everything feels tiny and distant: the compact castle to the right, the two tiny riders in the background, the two walkers with tall hats and staffs beside their slender dog. I like to think that graphic silence is like looking at the ancient firmament, where human life seems small beneath a serene immensity.

It looks like a fairy tale castle but very tiny and far away. It has two round towers with pointy roofs like a little witch hat and tiny windows. I like the river in front and the wooden bridge where two men with tall hats walk with a skinny dog following them. To the right there is a little boat with a hanging cloth and people hiding under the leaves. And there are many trees, one really tall and messy as if it is very windy. Everything looks very quiet and calm.
