pair of hanging scrolls; ink on paper
What you would seeLo que verías
The work is a pair of vertical hanging scrolls placed side by side with a thin white gap between them, on aged paper with a warm beige tone, subtle staining and a soft fibrous texture. In the left scroll, at the bottom, two dark elongated fish swim near a jagged rock rendered with washy black ink, dry brushstrokes and splattered dots suggesting roughness and moss; water is hinted with a few wavy lines and very pale gray washes. In the right scroll, more fish peek from among rounded stones and seaweed, with a tall slender reed arching gracefully to the left, its narrow leaves cut against the empty ground. Most of the upper area is left blank, a generous negative space that creates air and depth. Black ink dominates, with smoky gray gradations and dense, slightly glossy accents on the fishes backs and eyes. Small square red seals appear in the middle third of each scroll, and the top and bottom mountings show faint golden edging typical of traditional kakejiku mounting.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Take in both scrolls as a single waterscape and notice the large empty upper area that lets the composition breathe. Then focus on the splattered rock and the arching reed that balance weight and lightness. Finally look for the half-hidden fish among stones and weeds, whose bright eyes shift the scale and enliven the whole scene.
ContextContexto
This is a pair of hanging scrolls titled Fish and Rock; Fish and Seaweed, attributed to Rinkyo, a Japanese artist active during the Momoyama period (1573–1615), according to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art. The technique is ink on paper, characteristic of Japanese painting influenced by Chinese monochrome ink tradition. No detailed original description is preserved in the source and little is known about Rinkyo's biography, so the artist remains poorly documented. The work belongs to the Japanese Art department and represents a format common at the time for intimate contemplation and interior display, where nature and emptiness are in dialogue.

Curious detailDato curioso
In Japanese ink painting, leaving more than half the paper blank, as here, is not emptiness but an active element representing water, mist or sky and is valued as much as the brushed areas.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I am drawn to the warm beige paper with its fibrous texture and subtle age spots. I notice how the black ink behaves differently: watery and dry-brushed on the angular rock to create roughness, diluted in smoky gray washes to suggest water, and dense and glossy on the backs and eyes of the fish. I love the empty upper area, that negative space that lets the work breathe and that we must also protect. The red seals and the golden border remind me that the mounting itself is part of the history.

I look at this pair of scrolls and think of constellations. The dark fish at the bottom are like stars that only shine against the void, that large beige negative space that becomes our night sky. I like that not everything is painted: the water is only hinted at with wavy lines, like dark matter we sense but cannot see. The two-panel composition separated by a white margin reminds me of binocular vision through a telescope. The slender reed curving to the left looks like an orbit drawn in ink across immensity.

These two drawings are like a double window into the bottom of the water. On the left I see two little black fish hiding next to a big scratchy rock, do you see them? On the right there are more little fish among round stones and seaweed, and a tall thin plant bending over like it is waving hello. At the top nothing is painted, just empty paper, and that makes me feel the water is very deep. My favorites are the shiny eyes of the fish, they look like little black marbles.
