What you would seeLo que verías
The piece is a bronze dagger or spear point photographed vertically against a neutral gray background, seen from above. It has an elongated, symmetrical leaf shape with a sharp tip at the bottom and a short rectangular tang at the top for hafting to a handle. The metal shows an uneven patina in dark brown to almost black, with ochre, greenish and golden patches from corrosion and wear. A raised midrib runs the entire length from tip to heel, giving volume and symmetry. In the upper third there is a finely incised depiction of an antelope — likely an ibex — in profile, reclining with folded legs and long horns curving backward; below the animal is a stylized plant element resembling a palmette or lotus. The left edge shows a small notch where material has been lost. Side lighting casts a soft shadow to the left, revealing the shallow relief and thickness of the metal. The texture is rough in corroded areas and smoother where the engraving is preserved.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Take in the full leaf-shaped silhouette and the central rib that organizes the blade. Then focus on the upper engraving of the antelope; its calm, resting posture contrasts with the sharp, weapon-like function. Finally notice the mottled corrosion and the small chip on the edge as traces of age on the metal.
ContextContexto
According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a dagger point dated to 1540–1296 BCE, attributed to Egypt’s New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty (1540–1069 BCE), made of bronze. The maker is unknown. It belongs to the Department of Egyptian and Ancient Near Eastern Art and was a gift of Vivian Merrin. The source record provides no further description or archaeological context. In the New Kingdom bronze was the standard metal for weapons and tools, and blades were often decorated with incised animal motifs with symbolic meaning. The exact findspot and whether its use was practical, ceremonial or votive is not recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso
New Kingdom bronze blades usually had a tang rather than an integral handle; the blade was fitted into a handle of wood, bone or ivory that rarely survives, which is why only the metal part is seen today.

What holds my attention is the patina. This bronze has spent more than three thousand years changing: dark almost black patches, ochre and greenish spots from corrosion. Down the middle, the central rib runs from tip to heel and once gave it strength. Near the short rectangular tang for the handle, the incised engraving of the reclining antelope with its long curved horns is still readable. I wonder how to stabilize that thin line without erasing it and how to record the small notch on the left edge as a trace of time.

I look at this point like a constellation. The central rib is a north-south axis and the engraved antelope feels like a figure in the Egyptian sky. I imagine someone tracing that long-horned ibex and the plant motif below with a burin as if connecting stars. The lance-shaped symmetrical blade reminds me of how we align instruments: sharp tip, base to fit a handle. It is bronze from the New Kingdom, between 1540 and 1296 BC, and it makes me think of desert nights spent watching the heavens.

It looks like a giant superhero arrow! It is dark brown with little golden and greenish spots as if it were rusty. In the middle it has a raised line going from top to bottom. Near the top there is a tiny engraved animal, an antelope with long little horns lying down as if resting, and below it a small plant. It has a little square tang to attach a handle and a tiny bite on the left edge. I imagine it shone a lot when it was new and that someone took great care of it.
