The object is a low, bean- or kidney-shaped ceramic pillow, shown in three-quarter view against a dark background fading to gray. Its sides are straight and relatively thick, with an off-white, unglazed base showing chips, wear and exposed earthenware body. The top is gently domed and glossy, dominated by a central cartouche with a creamy ground outlined in dark brown. Inside, a mandarin duck is depicted among lotus leaves and reeds: its head in ochre and amber with an orange beak, its speckled brown chest, and its pale green wings and tail dotted with darker spots. Surrounding the bird are lotus pads in muted greens and mustard yellows, slender rushes on the left, small tufted water plants, and fine incised ripples suggesting water. The outer border of the top is a vivid emerald green glaze, incised with scrolling tendrils, spirals and wavy black lines. Light accentuates the shiny green glaze against the softer matte center, highlighting glaze losses along the rim, subtle crazing and the handmade irregularity of the form that signals age and former daily use.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the striking contrast between the glossy emerald border and the pale, intimate scene at the center. Trace the outline of the duck, then follow the incised scrollwork that frames it. Notice the small chips and glaze wear along the edge, clues that this was an everyday functional object as well as an artwork.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a Cizhou ware pillow from the Jin dynasty (1115-1234), dated to the 12th-13th century, by an unknown maker in China. It is made of earthenware with incised decoration and slip coating with three-color glaze, a technique typical of Cizhou kilns. Such hollow ceramic pillows were used as headrests for sleeping rather than soft cushions, often decorated with auspicious motifs. The mandarin duck is a traditional symbol of marital fidelity and harmony in Chinese art. The exact kiln site and archaeological context are not recorded, but the form, technique and palette are consistent with northern Chinese production under Jin rule.

Curious detailDato curioso

Ceramic pillows were actually used for sleeping in China from the Sui dynasty onward; they were valued for keeping the head cool in summer and for preserving elaborate hairstyles.

What fascinates me most about this pillow is how two very different surfaces coexist: the glossy emerald green frame with its vitreous glaze, and the warm matte cream medallion where the mandarin duck rests. I notice the incised scrolls, the black lines imitating tendrils, and the wear along the edges, the chips revealing the beige body underneath and the fine crackle in the glaze. It is Cizhou ware from the Jin dynasty, 12th to 13th century, hollow and firm, made to support the head while sleeping, not as a soft cushion.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this pillow like a small elongated planet, bean shaped, with an intense green equator and beige poles. On its upper hemisphere there is a lake map: a mandarin duck with a mottled chest and orange beak floats among green and ochre lotus leaves and slender reeds. It reminds me of observing a wetland through a telescope, with dark spots like shadows and a cream sky around it. It is a Cizhou piece from the Jin dynasty, 12th to 13th century, used hard and hollow as a headrest for sleeping.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This pillow is not squishy like mine! It is hard, made of ceramic, shaped like a little bean and it shines like candy. On top there is a pretty little duck with an orange beak and green wings resting among lotus leaves and little water plants. Around it there is a strong green frame with swirly drawings that look like tiny snails. I like it because the duck looks so calm. They say it is very old, from China, from the 12th and 13th centuries, and that ducks like this mean the family loves each other a lot.
