Tin-glazed soft-paste porcelain with enamel decoration

What you would seeLo que verías

Small tin-glazed porcelain figurine photographed against a plain soft gray background. In the foreground a recumbent lion stretches across most of the length of the work, its body in profile facing right but its head turned to face the viewer directly. Its thick mane is heavily modeled in relief with brushed strokes in tan, beige and dark brown to suggest tufts of hair, its mouth slightly open revealing teeth and dotted whiskers, its eyes pale yellow with dark pupils giving an alert stare. The front paws extend forward onto an irregular bright green base suggesting grassy ground, the hind legs tucked beneath the body. Astride its back sits a light-skinned human figure with legs draped on both sides, smiling, wearing a small green cap and a richly patterned short tunic: white ground dotted with gray with dense bouquets of red, blue and yellow flowers, gold trim at collar, cuffs and belt, long striped blue sleeves and loose light-blue trousers with deep folds. The left hand rests gently on the lion's head, the right hand held open in a relaxed gesture. The glossy enamel catches light on the lion's flank and on the base, with tiny crazing and soft wear of pigment visible on close inspection, consistent with 18th-century soft-paste porcelain.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the lion's forward gaze, then follow the rider's hand resting familiarly on its head. Notice the contrast between the loosely brushed fur and the meticulously painted floral costume, a clue to European ideas of the exotic as both natural and ornamental.

ContextContexto

Work attributed to the Chantilly Porcelain Factory in France, circa 1740–1745, made in tin-glazed soft-paste porcelain with enamel decoration. According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, exotic animals were prized status symbols and the fashion for housing them in menageries was popularized by Louis XIV at Versailles. This lion, with other animal figures from the factory, was probably modeled after living specimens in the menagerie established by Louis Henri, Duke of Bourbon and Prince of Condé, founder of the Chantilly factory. The individual modeler and original ownership history are not documented.

What excites me most are the traces of time in the shine, that glossy glaze that still reflects light but already shows tiny crackles and faded color, so typical of eighteenth-century soft-paste porcelain. Look at the mane modeled in relief with brown and beige tufts, the yellow eyes with dark pupils and the bright green ground under the outstretched paws. The flowered tunic with golden trims and the green cap have also lost a bit of intensity, and that tells us how this Chantilly porcelain was used and kept over time.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I see this reclining lion with its head turned forward and alert gaze, I cannot help thinking of Leo, the constellation that dominates the spring sky. This porcelain lion is not fierce, it is calm under a light-skinned rider with a kind smile who rests a hand on its head. I like to imagine that, like the lions in the Versailles ménagerie that inspired the Chantilly factory, this little animal was a way to bring the exotic and distant into a home, just as we bring faraway stars closer with a telescope.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This lion looks like it is posing for a photo! It is lying down with its little paws stretched out but with its head turned staring right at you with yellow eyes, as if saying hi. On top sits a man with a green cap and a tunic full of little red, blue and yellow flowers that looks like party pajamas, and very baggy light blue pants. He has his little hand on the lion’s head as if it were his giant pet. The shiny bright green ground looks like candy grass and everything sparkles because it is made of porcelain.
