What you would seeLo que verías
Rectangular miniature with a red outer border and thin gold inner line, composed as a layered village celebration. Across the top, a mustard-yellow band carries black devanagari script; beneath it a deep blue night sky meets a pale horizon, a row of dark green trees, white domed pavilions and pink and ochre rooftops. In the upper left chamber, a woman reclines on a white canopied bed, wearing a pale lilac sari and holding a blue-skinned infant; an attendant leans toward her while other women peer through doorways and latticed windows. Mid-ground shows clusters of women in vivid saris — crimson, mustard yellow, sage green and lavender — talking, clasping hands and carrying vessels near whitewashed walls. In the lower green courtyard, a lively crowd dances, blows long horns and beats drums, pouring and splashing curds and ghee; small children, some nearly nude, run among white splashes and golden pots. At the bottom left under a red niche, an older bare-chested man in a yellow dhoti and pearl necklace sits playing hand cymbals, flanked by two listeners. The light is flat and ornamental, with crisp ink outlines, touches of gold on jewelry and architecture, and the matte texture of gum tempera on paper.

Start with the yellow text band and move down to the chamber where Yashoda holds the blue infant. Follow the zigzag of courtyards and balconies crowded with women and musicians. Pause at the lower left pavilion: the cymbal player is the narrator who frames the whole celebration above.
ContextContexto
Painting by an unknown artist, dated about 1705–1710, from northwestern India, Rajasthan, Rajput Kingdom of Mewar. Made with gum tempera, ink and gold on paper. It illustrates the Sursagar, the devotional poetry collection dedicated to Krishna attributed to the blind poet and Hindu saint Surdas. Verse 5 is inscribed at the top. The image shows the festivities around the newborn Krishna: his foster mother Yashoda rests with the dark-skinned infant — shown as blue — while village women crowd to see him and men celebrate with music and distribution of silver coins on behalf of Nanda, the village elder and foster father. Surdas appears in the hut at the lower right playing cymbals as he recites.

Curious detailDato curioso
The blue skin of Krishna is not merely symbolic color in Rajput painting: his name means ‘dark’ in Sanskrit, and artists used blue to make the deity instantly recognizable among many pale-skinned figures.

I focus on how this Mewar miniature from around 1705–1710 is made. It is gum tempera, ink and gold on paper, with flat light and black ink outlines. I notice the red margin and the inner gold border framing the rectangle, and the matte texture of the pigments. At the top, the yellow band with black ink devanagari is verse 5 of the Sursagar. The subtle gold on jewelry and white domes still catches light, and the blue skin of the baby contrasts with Yashoda’s lilac sari and the greens of the courtyard. It is a delicate, highly narrative surface.

Even though it is not a night sky, I am drawn to the upper band of this festive village. The sky is a flat yellow with writing, below a dark blue horizon that separates the celestial from the human. There are no stars, but the contrast between the yellow band and the night blue structures the reading like a horizon line. Below, green trees and white domes mark another boundary. I like how color signals space without perspective: at the top the sacred and the text, below the celebration with music and water jars in the green courtyard.

There are so many people celebrating! At the top, a lady in a lilac sari is lying on a white bed holding a blue-skinned baby, that is Krishna. Women in red, yellow and green saris visit her through doors and windows. Below, on the green grass, everyone dances, plays long horns and drums, and throws white stuff that is curd and ghee. I see golden jars and little white splashes on the ground. In a little corner, an older man in a yellow dhoti plays small cymbals. It looks like a party for the whole village.
