What you would seeLo que verías
A ceramic vessel with a rounded globular body, tall narrow neck and flaring mouth, photographed frontally against a neutral dark gray background. The painted scene occupies the belly of the vase in the foreground. At center rises a thick branching tree trunk in solid black. To the left, the goat-legged god Pan is perched on the trunk, his skin rendered in dense black slip; his light tan shaggy goat legs, short tail, beard, small horns and pointed ears are clearly visible. He holds a syrinx or panpipe at his chest and extends both hands to offer a hare in beige and ochre tones toward the female figure opposite him. To the right a woman with white skin stands with both hands resting on the trunk; she wears a long dark chiton with folded drapery and a reddish mantle over her shoulders, her hair gathered under a radiate diadem. The base of the vessel and the interior of the mouth show heavily worn, mottled black glaze revealing the pale creamy-pink clay beneath. Even studio lighting highlights the matte surface and small areas of paint loss, conveying a cabinet-scale object probably about 15 to 20 centimeters tall.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the dark trunk that divides and joins the scene between the two figures. Then look at Pan's outstretched hands offering the hare and the woman's hands resting on the bark, a pause of contact. Finally notice the added white, red and ochre details that enliven the figures against the pale clay ground.
ContextContexto
According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a lekythos, an oil vessel, made in Paestum in South Italy around 330–320 BCE and attributed to the Asteas/Python Workshop active about 360–320 BCE. It belongs to a small group of vessels that revived black-figure decoration in the second half of the fourth century BCE, long after the technique had fallen out of fashion in mainland Greece. Unlike most examples, which are smaller and show a single figure such as a woman or bird, this one presents a more complex and colorful scene with the god Pan and a draped woman, perhaps a nymph or possibly the moon goddess Selene. The exact identity of the woman and the original context of use are not certain.

Curious detailDato curioso
Black-figure was largely replaced by red-figure in the sixth century BCE, yet Paestan workshops revived it centuries later with added white and red pigments for more narrative mythological scenes.

I focus on the matte surface and the very worn black glaze at the base and mouth, where the creamy pinkish clay shows through. This oil lekythos comes from Paestum, around 330 to 320 B.C., and what amazes me is its use of black-figure long after it had fallen out of use. I notice the paint losses and the beige and ochre tones of the hare, the solid black of Pan and the reddish mantle of the woman. Made to be held in the hand, about 15 to 20 centimeters tall, today it lets us read time in every speckled chip.

I cannot help thinking of the night when I see the white-skinned woman with a radiate diadem facing Pan. Some interpret her as Selene, goddess of the moon, and that changes the pastoral scene. Pan, with his goat legs, horns and panpipes at his chest, offers her a hare over a branching trunk, like a gift under moonlight. It is a small vessel from Paestum, from the workshop of Asteas and Python, with a more complex scene than other lekythoi that show a single figure. It makes me imagine myths told at dusk.

Look at Pan! He has furry goat legs, a little tail, tiny horns and pointy ears and he is sitting on a black trunk trying to keep his balance. He holds his little flute against his chest and with both hands he stretches a beige hare toward the lady. She stands on the other side of the trunk in her long dark dress and reddish shawl with a shiny little crown in her hair. The little vase is like a chubby bottle with a long neck and it looks old and a bit faded. I like that it looks like they are playing at giving a gift.
¡Mira a Pan!
