What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal print on cream-colored paper, with uneven margins and rounded upper corners to the image. In the foreground below, a religious compound unfolds seen from above and at an angle: wooden pavilions with broad sloping roofs in brown and ochre tones, fenced corridors, pale earthen courtyards, and short stairways. Dark blue-green pines with clipped crowns frame the buildings; at left, a blue-gray rock emerges beside a small figure in a conical hat. Tiny figures in blue and light clothing walk inside the compound, one seemingly carrying a bundle; their scale makes the architecture feel monumental. At center rises a tall, slender pine linking the courtyard to the background. Beyond, misty hills in gray and green vegetation lead to a strip of deep-blue sea. Small white sails can be made out and, in the distance, low bluish mountains beneath a graduated sky, deep blue at the top and pale near the horizon, crossed by horizontal gray clouds. Above are cartouches with black calligraphy, a dark rectangle with white characters, and red seals that balance the composition.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the tiny figures in the courtyards to sense the scale of the shrine, then follow the tall central pine upward. Let your eye cross the misty hills and the sea until you reach the distant mountains. Finally, look for the bell suggested by the title: its absence turns sound into imagination.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the cream colored paper and its irregular margins with rounded upper corners, so typical of woodblock printing. I notice how the ochres and browns of the roofs contrast with the intense blue of the sea and the dark greenish blue of the clipped pines. The sky gradient, from deep blue to pale near the horizon, suggests evening without bright light. I am intrigued by the cartouches with black calligraphy and the red seals that balance the composition and show the passage of time on the print.

I am drawn to that gradient sky that shifts from deep blue to pale near the horizon, crossed by horizontal gray clouds. It is the moment of the evening bell, when light fades and the low mountains of Awa become bluish silhouettes over the sea. From the shrine above, the slender pine feels like an axis between earth and sky. I imagine the sound of the bell traveling over the small white sails and the misty hills toward the sunset.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Everything looks super tiny from above! The pavilions look like little wooden houses with huge roofs and there are tiny people in blue clothes walking like little ants, one even carries a bundle. I like the tall pine in the middle that looks like a giant guarding the courtyard. Far away the sea is super blue and there are little boats with tiny white sails. Up top there are black letters and little red seals like stickers. I want to count all the dark topped pine trees.
