Fragment of a handscroll remounted as a hanging scroll; ink and slight color on paper
What you would seeLo que verías
A wide horizontal sheet of aged, warm beige paper fills almost the entire image, edged by a narrow strip of mounting fabric with small ochre floral motifs. There is no landscape or architecture: the empty background places all the weight on two seated figures and three areas of black calligraphy. On the right sits a young monk with a shaved head, shown in three-quarter view facing left. He wears broad, layered robes drawn with flowing black lines that pool around his knees; his hands rest close together in his lap and his expression is calm, with a small mouth and lowered gaze. On the left, an older monk mirrors that posture but turns more toward the viewer. Wrinkles cross his forehead, his mouth is slightly open, and both hands lift a long string of prayer beads at his chest. Vertical columns of cursive writing run between the figures and along the left side, while shorter, bolder inscriptions above each man identify him. The ink ranges from deep black to pale gray, the paper shows fibers, stains, and soft irregularities, and tiny touches of reddish color appear on lips, cheeks, and hands.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the empty paper and the lines of ink, then compare the two bodies: one young and still, the other older and in mid-gesture. Notice how the columns of calligraphy are not captions but part of the portrait. Look last at the small touches of red on the lips and hands, which bring the faces gently to life.
ContextContexto
This is the final fragment of a Japanese handscroll from the late 1300s to the 1400s, Muromachi period, later remounted as a hanging scroll. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, its preface said it was based on a selection made in 1347 by Eikai (1278-1347) of Kashūji temple: 36 Buddhist monks paired with their waka, poems of 31 syllables. The beginning of the scroll is preserved at the Tokyo National Museum. The figures shown here are Jōkei (1155-1212), on the right, and Myōe (1173-1232), on the left. The author is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso
A waka has 31 syllables arranged as 5-7-5-7-7; here, each poem is placed beside its author, so the scroll is read as both anthology and portrait gallery.

- How does the meaning of each portrait change when his own poem is placed beside him?¿Cómo cambia el sentido de cada retrato cuando su propio poema se coloca junto a él?
- Why might so few lines and almost no color be enough to distinguish two people who lived centuries earlier?¿Por qué unas cuantas líneas y casi nada de color pueden bastar para distinguir a dos personas que vivieron siglos atrás?

I pause on the warm beige paper and how the ink breathes on it. I see fibers, soft stains and gentle irregularities from time, a sign that this fragment of a horizontal scroll lived a long life before being remounted as a hanging scroll. The fluid black lines of the layered robes and the pale grays of the calligraphy show different hands and different brush loads. Tiny reddish touches on lips and cheeks are minimal yet they hold the portrait together. And the mount with small ochre flowers at the edge frames everything with quiet respect.

What amazes me most is the emptiness. Like the night sky, the background with no landscape or architecture lets two presences shine: on the right the young monk with lowered gaze and hands in his lap, on the left the older monk holding a string of prayer beads. The vertical columns of black calligraphy are like constellations ordering the space between them. That minimalism from the Muromachi period invites slow looking, measuring the distance between figures and texts, and finding serenity in very little.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
I see two monks sitting on cookie-colored paper. The one on the right looks young and calm, with his shaved head and his many-layered robe that looks all wrinkly. The one on the left is older, with little wrinkles, and he is holding up a long necklace of beads with both hands. Between them there are black letters written downward, like little lists. The background is empty, with no houses or trees, and there is just a bit of pink on their mouths and cheeks. I like it because they look calm.
