Sepia-toned horizontal albumen photograph taken on the shore of a calm lagoon. In the immediate foreground, on uneven sandy ground, lies a large heap of dried seaweed and vegetal debris, dark and fibrous in texture, with stones at its base. Near the heap, slightly to the right, a woman sits on a simple wooden chair, sewing or knitting with downcast eyes and focused attention; she wears a long plaid skirt, a light blouse with puffed sleeves, and a kerchief over her head and neck. Standing further right, a young woman poses facing the camera, her right hand raised to her forehead as if shielding her eyes from the sun; she wears a dotted blouse, a plaid skirt, and a headscarf. In the middle distance, two women stand with their backs to the viewer at the water's edge, one pointing toward the horizon. The lagoon stretches calmly behind them, with soft reflections, mooring posts emerging from the water, and several sailboats at anchor with furled sails. In the far background the silhouette of an island with low buildings and a tower closes the horizon. The light is diffuse and pale, the sky washed out with no strong clouds. In the lower right corner the photographer's series inscription and number are visible. The image has the moderate sharpness and warm, low-contrast tonality typical of 19th-century albumen prints.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the foreground heap and the figures on the shore, then follow the waterline toward the anchored boats and the distant island. Notice the contrast between the woman who looks directly at the camera and the two figures turned away pointing to the horizon; that tension between pose and everyday life reshapes how the scene reads.

ContextContexto

This is an albumen print by Carlo Naya (1816–1882), an Italian photographer active in Venice, titled Chioggia, Under the Marina, dated around 1870. It belongs to the Photography department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. It shows daily life in Chioggia, a fishing town in the Venetian Lagoon, in the late 19th century. Naya was renowned for views of Venice and its surroundings made for travelers and collectors. The albumen process, dominant at the time, allowed multiple paper prints from a collodion negative. The names of the sitters are not recorded; they probably posed for the photographer in a scene that blends documentary observation with a picturesque composition.

Curious detailDato curioso

Albumen prints used egg white to bind light-sensitive chemicals to paper, giving them their characteristic glossy surface and warm sepia tone.

I linger on the surface of this albumen print by Carlo Naya from around 1870. The sepia tone, soft contrast and fine grain reveal the process: an albumen paper copy from a collodion negative. Notice the large mound of seaweed in the foreground, dark and fibrous with stones at its base, and the uneven sandy shore. The moderate sharpness and pale, diffuse light are typical of the period. At the lower right you can still read the publisher inscription and serial number, marks that helped identify and sell these views to travelers and collectors.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Even though this is not a sky photo, I am drawn to its light. It is a pale morning on the Chioggia lagoon, with a whitish sky without sharp clouds and soft reflections on calm water. That diffuse light lets you see the distant silhouette of an island with buildings and a tower, and closer by the mooring poles and sailboats with furled sails. The standing woman with her hand near her forehead seems to shield herself from the sun, a gesture that speaks of glare on the water even on a hazy day.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There is so much to look at here! In front there is a giant pile of dry seaweed that looks like a shaggy mountain. On one side a woman sits on a wooden chair sewing very focused, wearing a checked skirt. Another young woman stands posing with her hand near her forehead to block the sun. In the back two women face the water and one points far away. On the lagoon there are tiny sailboats and little poles sticking out of the water. I wonder if they posed for the photographer as if playing a posing game.
