What you would seeLo que verías
Centered against a soft gradient background shifting from dark charcoal at the top to pale gray below, a silver drinking vessel known as a cann stands upright. It is shown frontally, slightly angled, so the handle is mostly hidden behind the thick, rounded rim. The cylindrical body is plain and slightly tapering, widening just above a stepped, molded circular foot that catches the light with concentric ridges. The metal surface is polished yet mellowed by age: warm, golden reflections glow inside the hollow interior and along the rim, while the exterior shows a cooler, matte silver with faint tarnish spots and fine surface marks from use. On the front wall a finely engraved cartouche commands attention: an ornate Rococo scrollwork frame with curling foliage and a small mask or cherub face at the bottom, enclosing an oval reserve that holds a standing animal, likely a bear or hound. The lighting is soft and directional from above, creating gentle highlights on the curves and a diffused shadow beneath the base. The scale suggests a sturdy, hand-held domestic object, functional and intimate, made to be lifted and used at table.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the warm glow inside the rim and move down to the engraved cartouche on the front. Then trace the stepped foot and how light slides across its moldings. Finally look closely at the tiny engraved details, the central animal and the small face below, which hint at personal ownership.
ContextContexto
Museum records from the Cleveland Museum of Art identify the work as a silver cann made in 1727 by Paul Jacques de Lamerie (1688–1751), active in 18th-century England. Lamerie, of French Huguenot background and working in London, was among the most celebrated silversmiths of his time. It is classified under Decorative Art and Design and entered the collection as a gift of Geo. H. Bowman Jr. The technique is silver, likely raised, cast and engraved for the armorial cartouche. The original patron and the precise meaning of the engraved crest are not recorded in the available data, though it appears to be a family badge.

I pause at what time has left on this 1727 cann. I see the soft patina, those warm golden glints inside the rim and the cooler matte silvers outside, with tiny spots and wear marks. I love the molded foot with stepped rings still catching light, and the engraved cartouche with rococo scrolls, foliage and a little mask below. It is silver worked with patience, polished, hammered and engraved to preserve an emblem that has survived almost three centuries.

This cann reminds me of a small metallic planet under overhead light. Its cylindrical body and circular foot reflect like a polished moon, against a gradient from black above to pale gray below. The golden interior glow looks like a trapped sun. I am intrigued by the oval on the front with that standing animal, like an engraved constellation. It is a solid, domestic, handheld object, but its soft gleam and diffuse shadow give it something of an everyday eclipse.

It looks like a giant superhero cup! It is tall, silvery and very shiny, with a thick rim and a belly to hold even though the handle is hidden behind. At the bottom it has little round steps that bounce the light. The funniest part is the little drawing on the front, with swirls, tiny leaves and a funny face underneath, and in the middle a standing animal that looks like a little bear. I imagine it goes clunk when you set it down and keeps sparkly juice inside.
