What you would seeLo que verías

A tall porcelain vase with a flared cup shape on a narrow foot and a stepped circular base, centered against a soft gray background. The surface is densely encrusted with hundreds of tiny white blossoms with yellow centers, plus large protruding spherical clusters of white flowers that create a snowball effect. Twisted brown branches with rough bark texture and glossy green leaves arch to form handles on both sides. Colorful birds are perched among the branches and blossoms: a bright red bird on the left, several birds with blue, yellow and brown plumage with outspread wings on the right, and two more at the foot beside pink and yellow roses with green foliage. Thin gilded rims line the mouth, the foot and the base, with visible fine craquelure. Soft studio lighting emphasizes the extreme three-dimensional relief, the delicate petals, feathers and bark, giving the piece a lush yet fragile opulence typical of a 19th-century display vase.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall snow-covered silhouette and then trace the branch-handles that structure the body. Notice how the birds and roses break the floral repetition and add movement and color accents. Look at the gilded rims at the top and base that frame the decorative excess and highlight the technical virtuosity of porcelain modelling.

ContextContexto

According to source data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a vase by the Meissen Porcelain Factory, a German manufactory established around 1710, dated 1850 to 1899, German 19th-century culture, porcelain technique, categorized as Ceramic in the Decorative Art and Design department. Curious detailDato curioso

Meissen’s Schneeballen decoration, developed in the 18th century, is made by hand-modelling and individually applying hundreds of tiny porcelain petals to create the appearance of snow-covered viburnum blossoms.

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely at this vase you see hundreds of tiny white florets with yellow centers and large snowball clusters, all attached by hand one by one to the porcelain. I am struck by the braided brown branches that form the handles with glossy green leaves and the gilded rim, now crackled with age. Each red, blue or yellow bird is hand painted and projects from the cluster. It is pure nineteenth century virtuosity, beautiful yet fragile, every raised petal is a fracture risk we monitor with a magnifier.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This vase reminds me of a constellation. Against the neutral gray background, the white flowers are like stars and the large snowball clusters look like globular clusters floating in space. The twisted brown branches trace orbits between them and the colorful birds are like planets in transit. Meissen, founded around 1710, creates here a self contained universe in porcelain between 1850 and 1899. It is not a real sky, it is a decorative nineteenth century cosmos where nature is arranged in calculated exuberance.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This vase looks like a giant cake decorated with white popcorn! It is covered everywhere with little white flowers and big balls like snowballs that stick out. There are colorful little birds, a red one on the left and blue and yellow ones on the right, hiding as if playing. The handles are branches with green leaves and at the bottom there are pink and yellow roses. It is tall, shaped like a cup, and very shiny. I want to count how many flowers it has without touching it.
