What you would seeLo que verías

At the centre, standing with her back to us, a nude woman occupies almost the full height of this vertical print. Her pale skin stands out against the dark, nearly matte purple background, marked by fine vertical lines suggesting wallpaper. Her long black hair falls loose down her back, and both arms are raised toward her head; one hand nears her forehead in a gesture of grooming or tiredness. Only a hint of her profile is visible, along with one breast seen from the side. She stands inside a low, oval, blue-grey basin on a mottled greenish floor. Beside her feet are a white fringed towel and a brown object, perhaps a sponge. To the left, a dark small table holds a lamp with a bluish base and a gathered red shade; below it appears a yellow-and-black lacy garment. On the right, a bed or dressing table covered in cream cloth holds a porcelain ewer and flowered basin, beside a pale lace curtain and an intense blue passage. In the lower foreground sits a grey metal pitcher. The aquatint creates grainy, soft, loosely defined surfaces, like private, nocturnal light.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the raised arms and follow the line of the back down to the feet in the shallow basin. Then notice how the red lamp and the deep blue shape on the right frame that pale body. Finally, look at the ordinary objects—the pitcher, sponge, towel and cast-off garment—which shift the scene from idealized nudity toward a private, everyday ritual.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this work is titled The Dressing Room, made in 1898 by the French artist Charles Maurin (1856–1914), and is an etching with aquatint, given by Louise S. Richards. The model’s identity and the exact place shown are not known; it was probably an imagined scene or one arranged in the studio, not an identified portrait. In late nineteenth-century France, colour aquatint made it possible to produce prints with soft tonal areas resembling watercolour. Bathing, hairdressing and dressing were frequent subjects at the time, allowing artists to depict domestic interiors and the body without a mythological pretext.

Curious detailDato curioso

Aquatint does not create its greys only with lines: the plate is dusted with resin and heated, so the acid bites around countless tiny grains. That is why the purple wall, green floor and skin here have a powdery, granular texture rather than sharp contours.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how this print was made. It is an 1898 etching with aquatint, and you can see it in the grainy surfaces, that soft matte look that feels like watercolor. The dark purple background has almost no shine and contrasts with the pale skin of the woman seen from behind. I am drawn to the stained greenish floor and the bluish gray basin, where the ink creates thin veils of color. The lamp with the red shade and the pitcher with faint flowers also show how delicate the printed color can be.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What interests me most is the private light of this nighttime scene. There are no stars or sky, but there is a lamp with a red shade on the left that suggests a warm, low glow, like a room at dusk. The figure standing inside the basin seems lit by that nearby light, while the purple background turns into deep shadow. It makes me think about how we observe intimate moments in dim light, with that feeling of quiet and a suspended moment just before getting dressed.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see a lady with no clothes standing inside a small gray tub. She is facing away and touching her long black hair with both hands. The room is dark purple and there are lots of things around her: a little lamp with red and blue, a white towel on the floor, a pitcher and a bowl with tiny flowers on a bed, and a curtain with lace. I feel like this is her private room and no one should bother her while she is getting ready.
