What you would seeLo que verías
A small black-ink engraving on aged, slightly irregular paper, enclosed by a thin rectangular frame. At the center, seen almost entirely from behind, stands a bearded man in profile to the right, identified by the vertical inscription “S. IACOBVS” along the left edge. His head, with wavy hair and a short beard, is surrounded by a bright halo with fine rays radiating outward. He wears a long, heavy cloak that falls in broad folds from his shoulders to near the ground, drawn with curved parallel lines and cross-hatching that create volume and shadow. Under the cloak a shorter garment and his bare feet are visible on lightly speckled earth. In his right hand he lifts an open book with dense lines suggesting text; over his left shoulder projects a long pole ending in an angular implement with a wavy edge. A slender staff leans diagonally near his legs. In the background is a low fence or low wall, flanked at ground level by two short cylindrical posts among small stones and tufts of grass. To the right rises a leafy plant; to the left, more vegetation emerges behind the post. On the left appear the date “1545” and the monogram “ISB” (with the H implied), and in the upper-right corner, the number “3.”
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the back turned to you: instead of a face, the cloak becomes the main subject. Then look for the bright halo and the open book in profile, and finally descend to the bare feet and the small plants that root this sacred figure in an everyday garden.
ContextContexto
This print, catalogued as *St. James the Less*, was made by the German artist Hans Sebald Beham (1500–1550) in 1545–1546, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds it in its Prints department. Beham is associated with the so-called Little Masters, printmakers known for highly detailed images on a very small scale. In Christian iconography, James the Less is one of the twelve apostles, distinguished from James the Greater; the implement carried over his shoulder and the book help identify him. The “3” in the upper corner suggests — though the source data do not confirm it — that it belonged to a series of apostles.

Curious detailDato curioso
Within a scene barely larger than a hand, Beham fits a figure, a garden, legible inscriptions, and hundreds of parallel lines: the saint’s monumentality comes from the engraving’s density, not from its size.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- Why might the artist show an apostle from behind rather than presenting his face to the viewer?¿Por qué un artista mostraría a un apóstol de espaldas en vez de presentar su rostro a quien mira?
- How does the contrast between the monumental cloak and the tiny garden change your perception of the saint?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del santo el contraste entre el manto monumental y el jardín diminuto?
- What story can an attribute — a book, a staff, a tool — tell when it is not accompanied by any narrative scene?¿Qué historia puede contar un atributo —un libro, una vara, una herramienta— cuando no viene acompañado de ninguna escena narrativa?

I pause on what the paper reveals: a still intense black ink on an aged support with irregular edges. Look at the folds of the cloak, built with curved parallel lines and cross-hatching that create weight and shadow. The halo is not a smudge, it is made of extremely fine rays engraved with precision. In the background, the low fence and cylindrical posts frame the scene with economy. Everything speaks of meticulous work, typical of a small format meant to be viewed up close and preserved with care.

What captivates me most is that radiant halo around his head, like a graphic sun with fan-like rays. In 1545 there were no photographs of the sky, but there was this need to depict light as a sign of importance. The man is seen from behind, almost like a silhouette in transit, and he holds an open book that seems to catch that light. It makes me think about how people once drew the invisible, energy or holiness, with lines that we now associate with stars and celestial glows.

It is a man seen from behind and you can see his beard from the side. He wears a giant cape that looks like a blanket with lots of little lines and he is barefoot, as if walking on grass. In one hand he holds an open book and on his shoulder he carries a funny shaped stick with a wiggly edge. Above his head he has a circle with little rays like a sun. Behind him there are little plants, pebbles and two short stumps that look like cut logs. I like counting everything around him.
