What you would seeLo que verías

A single standing figure occupies the center of the photograph, on a plain rectangular base, against a smooth gray background that darkens toward the top. The light is soft and even, with a gentle shadow to her right, bringing out the worn, matte texture of the earthenware. The woman is shown full-length, front-facing, with her chin slightly raised. Her face is round and full, with a calm expression: lowered eyelids, a small nose, and slightly parted lips. Her hair is gathered into two rounded buns stacked on top of her head. She wears a long, loose robe with a crossed neckline, very wide hanging sleeves, and a belt at the waist. The lower garment falls in softly incised folds to her feet, where the tips of her shoes peek out. Her right arm hangs relaxed at her side, fingers loosely separated; her left hand is raised to her shoulder, delicately holding a small sprig of plum blossoms between her fingers. Beige, cream, and stone tones dominate, warmed by faint rose and reddish-brown traces of pigment, especially on the sleeves, waist, and skirt. Small worn patches, dark flecks, and surface irregularities recall the piece's age.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with her face and raised head, then follow her left hand to the tiny flowers. Compare that delicate gesture with the breadth of her sleeves and skirt, and look for the faint traces of color that hint at how vivid she once looked.

ContextContexto

Earthenware figure made in northern China in the mid-700s, during the Tang dynasty (618–907), by an unknown maker. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, such figures were placed in tombs and offer a vivid picture of everyday life. Elegant women with varied hairstyles, garments, and activities reflect the fashion of the time; this plump, flamboyant lady was a common type in mid-8th-century tombs, especially around the cosmopolitan city of Xi'an. Alongside officials, musicians, dancers, hunters, foreign travelers, horses, camels, and guardian figures, she would accompany the deceased in the afterlife. The identity of the woman portrayed and her original tomb are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Her now pale surface is misleading: the work is earthenware covered in white slip with traces of pigment, so she was probably once painted in much livelier colors.

If you look closely you will see what time has left on her. She is made of fired clay, matte and porous, in beige and stone tones with very faint traces of pinkish and reddish pigment on the sleeves and skirt. I focus on the wear, the small dark spots and the tiny irregularities on the surface, because they tell us about her age and her time in a tomb. I also notice the soft folds of the robe and how delicate the fingers holding the small branch appear.

I like to imagine this woman looking at the end of winter. She holds a small branch of plum blossoms, which in China bloom very early, while it is still cold, announcing spring. During the Tang dynasty, in the eighth century, watching those flowers was also watching the calendar of the sky. I picture this figure in a tomb in Xi'an, accompanying someone on the journey to the afterlife, carrying a sign of the cycle of the year beginning again.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

She looks like she is posing for a photo and feels very elegant. She has a round little face, eyes almost closed and her mouth a little bit open. I love her hairstyle, two buns one on top of the other like little balls. Her dress is super long with huge sleeves that look like wings and almost cover her hands. With one hand she holds a little branch with tiny flowers and with the other she does nothing, just lets it hang. She stands very straight on her little base.
