What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical, oval textile fragment is centered against a flat, textured gray ground. Inside it stands a full-length female figure with vivid blue skin, seen in three-quarter view as she plays a large lute. Behind her body is a broad, pointed-oval mandorla in faded gold and cream, marked with thin, wavy horizontal bands like rays; around her head is a second, turquoise-blue halo. She wears an elaborate gold crown over dark hair, with small reddish ornaments curling at the sides, a necklace, a loose golden-yellow robe, and long skirts in ochre and brown whose lower edge ruffles unevenly. Pale green scarves loop around her arms and legs and swirl into spirals at her right side. The instrument dominates the center: a pale, pear-shaped body held against her torso, a deep blue rim and long neck rising diagonally to her raised left hand, while her right hand works near the strings. Her bare blue feet, with clearly stitched toes, rest on a soft blue-green lotus support at the bottom. The surface everywhere looks granular and fibrous, with visible embroidery stitches, worn gold thread, frayed transitions between colors, and a slightly irregular, hand-cut silhouette.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the contrast between the deep blue skin and the gold of the clothing and mandorla. Then follow the lute’s long neck up to the raised hand and notice how the figure seems caught mid-performance. Finally, look closely at the ruffled hem and curling scarves: their movement makes a stitched surface feel airborne.

ContextContexto

This embroidery, titled Celestial Musician, was made by an unknown maker in Central Asia in the 1300s, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held. It uses silk and gold thread over two layers of cotton. The source explains that Buddhist textiles in the Sino-Tibetan style survive in greater numbers, while Central Asian embroideries from the same period are exceedingly rare. The blue goddess, standing on a lotus and playing a bowed lute, may personify the sense of hearing; in Buddhism, the five senses could be represented as female deities, each in a different color. Her crown, hair, ruffled hem, scrolling scarves, and rainbow halo with rays are described as Central Asian in style. She was originally part of a large hanging.

Curious detailDato curioso

What looks like a complete oval image is in fact a fragment: the musician was cut out, or preserved, from a much larger hanging, so her original companions and setting are unknown.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does it change to imagine this musician once surrounded by other sense deities in a large hanging?¿Qué cambia al imaginar a esta música rodeada por las otras deidades de los sentidos en un textil colgante grande?
  2. Why might hearing be given a female body, blue skin, and a stringed instrument?¿Por qué el oído podría representarse con un cuerpo femenino, la piel azul y un instrumento de cuerda?
  3. How does the knowledge that this is embroidery, not painting, change the way you sense its music?¿Cómo cambia tu manera de imaginar su música al saber que es un bordado y no una pintura?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the grainy stitches and the worn gold thread over the two layers of cotton, you can see the silk work of this fourteenth century embroidery made in Central Asia. The irregular, hand-cut edge tells me it was part of a much larger hanging, now it is an oval fragment. I notice how the pale green scarves, the golden yellow tunic and the mandorla with wavy rays still hold their shape despite the fraying and fading over time.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

It reminds me of a sky map, that oval golden mandorla with thin wavy horizontal bands looks like an atmosphere with rays around the figure and the turquoise halo on her head is like a second sky. The blue goddess standing on the bluish green lotus with her long-necked lute makes me think about how sound travels, in Buddhism she personifies the sense of hearing and her intense blue color contrasts with the ochres and creams like a bright constellation.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The goddess is all blue and she plays a giant pear-shaped lute that reaches up to her chest! I like her golden crown with little reddish curls and her bare feet with tiny toes standing on a soft lotus flower. Her light green scarves float and make spirals on one side and behind her there is a big golden light with little lines like a sun. It looks fluffy because of the stitches and it seems like she is dancing while making music.
