Gum tempera on sized cotton

What you would seeLo que verías

A tall, rectangular painting on cloth, with frayed edges and a heavily worn, faded lower band. At the center sit two large lamas, almost symmetrical, facing forward in three-quarter view and turning slightly toward each other. Each is framed by a round arch with a pale halo behind his head, a deep red field, and concentric bands of blue, yellow, orange, and green like rainbows. They wear intense red robes and gold cloaks patterned with spirals and ornate borders, one shoulder and arm bare. With one hand raised they make a teaching gesture; the other rests open in the lap. The man on the left has a dark short beard and a sterner look; the one on the right is clean-shaven, paler, and calmer. Behind them are green cushions, small black elephant-trunked creatures, griffin-like figures, and tiny attendants at the sides. Between and above them sits a minute gray-haired lama amid stylized green, pink, and blue mountains. Across the top runs a row of seven small seated deities in red, gold, white, and green niches. Below the main figures are multicolored lotus petals, a frieze with small animals and vessels, and a bottom row of faded figures barely visible through abrasion and staining.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the symmetry between the two lamas, then look for what breaks it: beard, skin tone, and expression. Next, move your eyes upward to find the tiny teacher above them and understand that size here signals lineage, not distance. Finally, descend to the lotus petals, animals, and worn lower register, where the painting's age becomes visible.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this Central Tibetan thangka, dated c. 1236–1310 and painted in gum tempera on sized cotton, portrays Phagmo Drupa (1110–1170) and Tashipel (1142–1210), lineage masters of the Kagyu order of Tibetan Buddhism. The lama on the right founded Taklung Monastery in Lhasa, which became an important center of the order. Centered above them is their predecessor's teacher, Gampopa (1079–1153). The author is unknown. As the source notes, high monastic leaders were frequent subjects of early thangka painting, devotional cloth scrolls.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although their halos, lotus pedestals, and thrones place them at the level of Buddhas and bodhisattvas, the two lamas keep individualized faces — a beard, different complexions, distinct expressions — so the painting is at once an icon and a portrait.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why paint two teachers the same size and in mirror image, yet give them clearly different faces?¿Por qué pintar a dos maestros del mismo tamaño y en espejo, pero con rostros claramente distintos?
  2. What does it mean that the most senior teacher in the lineage is the smallest figure in the painting?¿Qué significa que el maestro más antiguo del linaje sea la figura más pequeña de la pintura?
  3. How does the damage along the bottom change what we can know — and feel — about this object?¿Cómo cambia el daño de la parte inferior lo que podemos saber —y sentir— sobre esta pieza?

Look at the worn edges and the almost lost, stained lower border. This gum tempera on sized cotton from central Tibet survived almost eight centuries, between 1236 and 1310. I notice how the intense red behind the two masters still vibrates, while the golds of the robes with spirals endure. The green cushions and rainbow arches reveal thin layers of pigment. Each crack reminds us it was a thangka, a devotional scroll that was rolled up, carried, and hung for prayer.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see two human suns under arches that look like orbits of color, concentric bands of blue, yellow, orange and green like a rainbow caught around a pale halo. Between them, above, a tiny luminous dot, the gray-haired lama among pink and blue mountains, is like a guiding star. The upper row of seven deities in red, gold, white and green niches reminds me of an ordered constellation. The whole set floats like a portable night sky for meditating on the lineage.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are two seated men who look like twins but they are not! One has a little beard and a serious face, the other has no beard and looks calmer. They wear shiny golden cloaks with one shoulder bare and make a hand gesture like they are telling something. Behind them are green cushions and little black animals with elephant trunks. Above there are more little colorful mountains and seven tiny houses with little people. Below there are lotus flowers in many colors, but it is a bit blurry.
