albumen print from wet collodion negative
What you would seeLo que verías
The photograph is filled almost edge to edge by the rough, weathered face of a light sandstone wall, rendered in warm sepia and soft gray tones characteristic of an albumen print. At the center, incised in an 18th-century cursive hand, is a five-line Spanish inscription, its darkened grooves contrasting with the porous, pitted stone; some words are underlined, notably the date 1726. The rock shows horizontal fissures, flaking layers, tiny pits and varied texture: smoother areas where the carving was made and coarse, granular zones around it. At the upper right, faint petroglyphs are visible, resembling hands or linear marks. Along the lower edge, placed parallel to the frame, lies a black measuring scale marked in inches from 2 to 34 with white numerals and tick marks, providing a sense of scale. In front of the scale and against the rock, sharp, dry leaves of a desert plant, likely yucca, protrude and cast thin shadows. The light is even and frontal, as in scientific documentation, without dramatic chiaroscuro, allowing the text to be read clearly and the stone's materiality to be fully appreciated.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start by reading the handwritten inscription at the center, then let your eye wander across the cracked texture of the surrounding stone. Use the numbered scale at the bottom to gauge the carving's actual size and notice the spiky leaves that interrupt it. Look for the faint marks at the upper right that hint at older layers of history predating the Spanish script.
ContextContexto
This is an 1873 albumen print from a wet collodion negative by Timothy H. O'Sullivan (American, 1840–1882), made for the War Department, Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army. It documents the 1726 inscription at El Morro in New Mexico, known as Inscription Rock, where Ensign Joseph de Payba Basconzelos recorded his passage. O'Sullivan photographed the American West during government survey expeditions after the Civil War. The work is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Mann. No further source description is provided.
I first look at the surface. This 1873 albumen print preserves the porous texture of the sandstone, with its cracks and flaking layers. The 1726 inscription stands out because someone darkened the grooves so O'Sullivan's wet collodion camera could capture it clearly. The even, front-facing light is not dramatic, it is scientific and legible. Below, the black ruler from 2 to 34 and the dry yucca leaves give us scale and desert context. It is a document trying to hold back erosion and time.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
To me this photo is like observing a constellation carved in stone. The pale wall is the sky, the five-line inscription is a human alignment meant to be seen for centuries. In 1873 O'Sullivan photographed it like an astronomer recording a transit, with military precision for the Corps of Engineers. The graduated ruler is his measuring telescope, turning rock into data. And those faint petroglyphs at the upper right are like older stars, other writings layered on the same universe of stone.

It looks like the stone is a giant notebook and someone wrote on it with a dark marker a very, very long time ago, in 1726. The letters are curly and a bit wobbly, as if the rock was not a smooth table. I like that at the bottom they placed a super long black ruler from 2 to 34 to measure, like when we measure at school. There are also pointy little leaves from a desert plant peeking in. At the top you can see tiny hand drawings made by other people before. The rock keeps many secrets!
