What you would seeLo que verías

The image is a rectangular print in black, white and greys, surrounded by a wide margin of cream paper lettered, in faint type, with the English title and the credits. More than the upper half is filled by a turbulent sky: dense, swirling clouds, vertical streaks of rain at the left, and a luminous break at the centre through which the sun is coming out again. Below, a broad hillside descends diagonally from the right toward the centre. Its surface, built from patches and scraped marks, suggests wet grass shining in places. On the hilltop stands the silhouette of a windmill with crossed sails; farther off, at the left, roofs, trees and a church spire can just be made out through the haze. The foreground is taken up with dark vegetation, bushes and loosely indicated flowers. At lower left a figure rides a pale horse; at lower right a team — probably horses — pulls a plough guided by a labourer. Tiny figures and grazing animals dot the slope, and several birds cross the clearing sky. Light sets almost black areas against intense whites, and a grainy texture softens every edge, as if the landscape were still damp.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the sky, because it occupies most of the image and determines the light everywhere else; then follow the bright slope downward. Look second for the smallest figures — the rider, the ploughman, the animals — since they give the landscape its scale. Finally, notice how the windmill and the church spire balance one another at opposite edges of the horizon.

ContextContexto

This mezzotint was made in 1831 by the British engraver David Lucas (1802–1881) after a painting by John Constable (1776–1837). It belongs to the series _Various Subjects of Landscape, Characteristic of English Scenery_, a project through which Constable sought to make his landscapes more widely known in print. Lucas worked closely within that undertaking, translating the effects of oil paint — passing rain, broken cloud and light on wet ground — into black and white. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds this impression, the work is an English 19th-century print. The precise place depicted is not recorded in the source data and remains unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

Mezzotint is worked from dark to light: the copper plate is first roughened all over so that it would print almost black, and the image is then created by smoothing and scraping areas back so that they hold less ink and appear progressively paler.

  2. Why might an artist choose to give the sky more space than the land and the people who work it?¿Por qué un artista podría dar al cielo más espacio que a la tierra y a quienes la trabajan?

I focus on how David Lucas translates John Constable's oil painting into mezzotint in 1831. That technique is all about texture: scraping and burnishing a plate to move from deep blacks to the luminous whites of the opening sky. I love the contrast here between the streaked rain on the left and the shine on the wet slope. The wide cream margin with the English title reminds us that it belongs to the series Various Subjects of Landscape and was a print made to circulate the landscape more widely.

What captures me most is the sky, which takes up more than half of the image. It is a sky in transition, just after the shower: dark swirling clouds still heavy, rain falling on the left and a bright opening in the center where the sun returns. I like to count the birds crossing that opening and see how the light shapes the hillside. The windmill at the top, outlined against the clouds, works like a weathervane and sets the scale of the rural landscape beneath that changeable weather.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like it just rained a lot and everything is shiny. The sky is full of gray clouds but the sun is already coming out in the middle. Below there is a big hill going down diagonally and at the top you can see a windmill with cross-shaped sails. In the front there are dark plants and I see a person on a light-colored horse on the left and another person with a team pulling a plow on the right. Far away there are little houses, trees and the pointy top of a church. And little birds are flying up above.

Y arriba vuelan pajaritos.
