What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, filling most of the frame, a young woman seen from the chest up balances a large bundle of kindling tied with cord on her head. She wears a light-colored kimono patterned with blue flowers and green leaves on the sleeves and chest, with a deep blue collar and inner sleeves, and a teal cloth covering her head and draping over her shoulders. Her face is round, with softly blushed cheeks, eyes slightly narrowed in a gentle smile and lips parted. One hand appears behind the bundle, steadying the load. To the left, a branch of maple with vivid red and orange cut-out leaves contrasts with the charred, textured black of the kindling, which shows touches of bluish gray. The background is flat, in a sandy beige tone with no detail. The composition spans a double page, with the central fold visible cutting lightly through the face and bundle. Outlines are thick and gray, color is flat and decorative, with matte surfaces and a stylized, graphic feel.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the contrast between the intense red maple and the rough black kindling on the head. Then move down to the serene face and the blue floral motifs on the kimono, which soften the weight of the load. Notice how the empty background and thick outlines turn an everyday scene into a flat, elegant graphic design.

ContextContexto

Work by Kamisaka Sekka (1866–1942) from the series Momoyogusa, published in 1909–10 during the Meiji period (1868–1912), according to Cleveland Museum of Art data. It is a color woodcut with gold and silver, part of a set of three printed albums. The images were first distributed individually to subscribers and later reissued in bound form for mass consumers, like this volume. Each print presents a vignette taken from nature or Japanese literature, many with a long history in Japan dating to the 900s or 1000s. The source notes that Sekka’s selections follow closely precedents from the Rinpa style originated by painter Tawaraya Sōtatsu and calligrapher Hon’ami Kōetsu.

If you look closely you will see the fold at the center: this image comes from a book opened across two pages and the crease cuts through the face and the bundle. I am interested in how the black of the firewood feels charred and grainy against the smooth beige background. The light kimono with blue flowers and the greenish head cloth are printed in flat matte inks, with thick gray outlines. It is a color woodblock print with gold and silver from the Momoyogusa series, 1909 to 1910. Think about paper registration and printing pressure.

I came looking for skies but here the background is a completely flat sandy beige, with no stars or clouds, and that makes everything else stand out. The maple branch on the left with red and orange leaves looks like a warm constellation next to the dark heavy block of firewood with bluish gray touches. The woman balances the bundle on her head and steadies the weight with one hand. It reminds me of how we carry weight and gravity here on earth, with balance and a steady center, cut out like a sharp silhouette.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look how she carries all that firewood on her head without dropping it! You can only see a little hand in back holding it. Her kimono is light with blue flowers and underneath a stronger blue peeks out, and on her head she wears a greenish bandana. She has pink cheeks and smiles with eyes closed. On one side there is a little branch with red leaves that looks like it is waving hello. The whole background is sandy color and the outlines are thick and gray, like a drawing to cut and paste.
