What you would seeLo que verías

A double-page spread from a horizontal album presents a stylized rural landscape seen from a middle distance, calm and almost abstract in feeling. In the foreground and center-right, about eight thatched-roof houses cluster together, their roofs rendered as soft, hill-like mounds in very dark brown, near-black and olive green; pale bands suggest whitewashed walls beneath the eaves, and triangular attic windows show mint-green lattice with white strokes. A small winding stream in flat blue meanders among the houses, edged with cream and pale earth tones that read as meadows. Two cherry trees in bloom anchor the composition: one on the left with a curving blue-grey trunk and fluffy pale pink canopy dotted with reddish brown, and a smaller, gnarled one leaning over the rooftops at center right. In the background, gentle hills in muted grey-green gradation rise against an ivory-yellow sky, empty of clouds or human figures. The surface is flat and matte, typical of woodblock printing, with crisp outlines and solid color areas; the central book fold is visible and the paper has a warm, slightly aged cream tone at the edges.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Take in first the cluster of dark roofs and the blue ribbon of the stream that organizes the village. Then focus on the cherry trees: their ink-washed trunks and soft pink blossoms provide a delicate counterpoint to the houses’ geometry and signal the arrival of spring.

ContextContexto

This print titled Harudenka is from Momoyogusa, Flowers of a Hundred Worlds, a set of three albums of color woodcuts with gold and silver created by Kamisaka Sekka in 1909–10 during the Meiji period (1868–1912). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the images were first issued individually to subscribers and later reissued in bound form for a wider market. Each print offers a vignette from nature or Japanese literature, many with histories dating to the 900s or 1000s. Sekka’s designs draw closely on the Rinpa style originated by painter Tawaraya Sōtatsu (c. 1570–1640) and calligrapher Hon’ami Kōetsu (1558–1637), reinterpreting its decorative language with modern graphic sensibility.

Curious detailDato curioso

Momoyogusa was celebrated as a showcase of Sekka’s graphic design skill, merging traditional woodblock craftsmanship with gold and silver printing to link historic Rinpa aesthetics with early 20th-century Japanese modern design.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the absence of people and roads, leaving only roofs, trees and water, shape your reading of village life?¿Cómo cambia tu sensación de la aldea al no ver personas ni caminos marcados, solo techos, árboles y agua?
  2. What feeling does the flat color and simplified form create compared with a realistic landscape?¿Qué efecto produce la simplificación de formas y colores planos frente a un paisaje realista?
  3. Why might a modern artist like Sekka revive a 17th-century style to evoke spring?¿Por qué un artista moderno como Sekka elegiría recuperar un estilo del siglo XVII para hablar de la primavera?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

This horizontal double-page spread makes me pause on its material qualities. Notice the aged cream paper at the edges and the clear central fold of the book. The colors are flat and matte, typical of woodblock printing, with solid areas and defined outlines. I am drawn to the dark thatched roofs and the mint green lattices with white strokes. Everything points to a very controlled color printing process, designed to be seen at mid distance with a sense of calm.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this landscape as if it were an inverted sky. The pale ivory yellow background works like an empty firmament, with no clouds or figures, above grayish green hills that mark the horizon. In the foreground, the two cherry blossoms in bloom are like constellations, the pale pink canopy dotted with reddish brown guides the eye. The blue stream winding between the eight houses reminds me of a narrow Milky Way crossing a silent hamlet.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a toy village. The eight little houses have dark fluffy roofs like hills wearing hats and little mint green windows. I like the two trees with pink flowers, one with a wiggly trunk and the other leaning over the roofs. The blue stream makes a curve like a party streamer between the houses. Behind there are little green hills and a cream colored sky. There are no people, just houses, trees and calm water.
