What you would seeLo que verías
At the lower right of a double-page album spread, a small, plump figure sits on a pale sage-green ground, wrapped in a voluminous deep indigo kimono and wearing a tall, glossy black eboshi hat. The face is round and pale with softly blushed cheeks and a calm, gentle expression; the body is almost entirely enveloped in fabric, with only a light-colored fan resting on the lap and a thin cord visible. Surrounding the figure is lush vegetation: on the left, a tall, dense shrub covered in tiny five-petalled white blossoms and dark green leaves, punctuated by star-shaped deep blue bellflowers; on the right, tall pampas grasses with slender stems and silvery plumes, mixed with clusters of small yellow flowers and more blue bellflowers. Behind, a rustic fence in muted grey-beige washes shows watercolor-like stains suggesting age and weathering, braced by two green bamboo poles crossed in an X. The palette is soft and earthy, with diffuse, flat light typical of woodblock printing and no strong shadows. Textures balance delicate linework for leaves and petals with flat areas of color and translucent washes in the background, creating a graphic, decorative effect. In the foreground, the figure appears diminutive against the surrounding nature, inviting close attention to each bloom and blade.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the blue figure at the lower right, then let your eye wander to the dense tangle of white and blue on the left. Notice the contrast between the solid, rounded form of the person and the airy linearity of grasses and flowers. Pause on the stained fence and the crossed bamboo poles, which act as a visual hinge between human presence and nature.
ContextContexto
This print belongs to Flowers of a Hundred Worlds (Momoyogusa), a set of three albums of color woodcuts with gold and silver created by Kamisaka Sekka (1866–1942) in 1909–10, during the Meiji period (1868–1912). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the images were first distributed one by one to subscribers and later reissued in bound form for mass consumers, like this volume. Each print features a vignette taken from nature or Japanese literature, with many scenes having a long history in Japan originating in the 900s or 1000s and interpreted by artists ever since. Sekka’s designs closely follow precedents from the Rinpa style originated by painter Tawaraya Sōtatsu (c. 1570–1640) and calligrapher Hon’ami Kōetsu (1558–1637), celebrated for its bold graphic design.

I focus on how Sekka builds the surface. The deep indigo kimono is a dense, matte plane that contrasts with the translucent washes of the background and the watercolor-like stains on the gray-beige fence. Notice the two green bamboo canes crossed in an X, they reinforce the decor both visually and structurally. The tiny five-petaled white flowers and the intense blue bellflowers are drawn with fine lines and flat color areas, typical of woodblock printing with touches of gold and silver. I love that balance between graphic design and handcraft, where every silvery pampas blade feels carefully tended.

This scene makes me think about scale. The figure with the black eboshi hat looks like a small planet wrapped in a deep blue atmosphere, seated on a pale green ground that is its intimate orbit. Around it a vegetal universe expands: the shrub with white flowers on the left and the tall pampas grasses on the right with silvery plumes create constellations of white, yellow and blue dots. With no strong shadows, the light is diffuse like a dawn seen from afar. It invites me to contemplate how something tiny can hold the vastness of a hundred worlds.

Look how tiny the person looks! It seems like nature is giant and they are hiding among the flowers. They wear a blue kimono like the night sky and a very tall black hat, and have a little fan on their lap. On one side there is a bush full of tiny white flowers and star-shaped blue bellflowers, and on the other side tall grasses with silvery feathery tops and yellow flowers. Behind there is a little stained fence with two green sticks crossed. I want to count all the little flowers and touch the tiny leaves.
