What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, the head and front claw of a dragon float against a smoky black and gray ink background. The creature stretches diagonally across almost the entire image, with its snout on the left and its outstretched talon on the right. Its skin is a pale greenish gray, with soft shading that suggests volume and faintly outlined scales on the brow and muzzle. The eyes are two luminous golden circles with small pupils that stare directly at the viewer; below, the wrinkled snout shows dark nostrils and a slightly open mouth with small white teeth. From its upper lip hang two long, curved, grayish whiskers that extend like ribbons until they brush the claw. The beard is shaggy, rendered with jagged strokes. The claw, seen in profile, displays three thick, curved nails in golden ochre, with textured webbing between them. The background is a dark, hazy gradient without a horizon, creating the effect of nighttime mist. A faint vertical line at the center marks the fold of the bound book. The woodcut technique is evident in the crisp outlines and in the metallic touches of gold on the eyes and nails.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dragon’s golden eyes, which anchor the composition. Follow the sweep of the long whiskers that link the head to the claw, joining the two visible parts. Linger on the gilded nails and on how the dark mist seems to dissolve the rest of the body, suggesting the beast is both emerging and vanishing.

ContextContexto

This print belongs to Momoyogusa, Flowers of a Hundred Worlds, a set of three albums of color woodcuts with gold and silver by Kamisaka Sekka (1866–1942), made in 1909–10 during the Meiji period (1868–1912). According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, the images were first distributed individually to subscribers and later reissued as bound volumes for mass consumers, like this book. Each print presents a vignette drawn from nature or Japanese literature, with subjects whose history dates back to the 900s or 1000s. Sekka’s designs closely follow precedents from the Rinpa style originated by painter Tawaraya Sōtatsu (c. 1570–1640) and calligrapher Hon’ami Kōetsu (1558–1637), blending craft tradition with modern graphic design.

Curious detailDato curioso

Momoyogusa is regarded as one of the last great masterpieces of traditional Japanese woodblock printing, produced with hand-carved blocks at a time when modern press printing was already widespread in Japan.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on how this print still feels alive even though it is printed. The dragon’s head and front claw stretch diagonally and reveal the faint vertical fold of the bound album at the center, a reminder that this was once a subscription book. I notice the pale greenish gray skin and the metallic gold touches on the eyes and claws, applied over the woodblock with a precision that still shines. The smoky black background feels like fog and reminds me we must control light and humidity to preserve it.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this dark background is a night sky with no stars. The dragon floats in that black and gray fog, as if emerging from an interstellar cloud. What hooks me are the two golden eyes, perfect shining circles that look like moons or planets staring straight at us. The long curved whiskers stretch like comet tails toward the claw with three ochre gold nails. It is a minimal yet vast scene, the emptiness makes the creature feel suspended in the cosmos, cut out against the night.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This dragon is looking at me! It has two very round golden eyes that shine a lot and a little wrinkly nose with dark nostrils. Its mouth is slightly open and you can see tiny white teeth. The funniest part is its two super long whiskers that look like floating ribbons reaching its hand with golden pointy nails. Its skin is a light greenish gray and it is floating in black fog as if it were nighttime. It looks like it will stretch its claw to say hi and it makes me giggle with excitement.
