What you would seeLo que verías
The object runs diagonally from upper left to lower right, suspended against a neutral ground that shifts from dark gray at the top to pale gray-white below. It is only the metal head of an axe; no handle remains. At the left, a broad, flat circular disc forms the rear end. Its rim is thick, and its face shows fine cracks, scratches, and worn patches. From its center, a short rectangular section passes through a hollow cylindrical socket—the opening where a wooden shaft would once have been inserted. That cylinder projects above and below the blade, with a thick-walled open mouth. Extending to the right is the blade itself: long, narrow near the socket, gradually widening, and curving very slightly downward. It ends in a broad, almost straight edge that looks somewhat blunt in the photograph. The metal is dark bronze with green and brown patina, bright highlights along polished edges, and duller, rougher areas of corrosion. Incised decoration is visible near the socket: bands of parallel lines, followed along the blade by a chain of interlaced spirals that fades toward the edge. A soft, elongated shadow beneath the piece gives it scale and an unexpected sense of lightness.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the hollow socket in the center and imagine the wooden shaft that no longer survives. Then follow the spirals along the blade: that decoration changes the object from a purely useful weapon into something meant to be seen. Finally, look at the wide disc on the left, which balances the visual weight of the long blade.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is a battle axe by an unknown maker, dated to around 1500 BCE, from Hungary and assigned to the Bronze Age. It is solid-cast in bronze and belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is housed in the Greek and Roman Art department and was purchased with the J. H. Wade Fund. In Bronze Age central Europe, bronze—an alloy of copper and tin—made it possible to produce weapons and tools harder than those of copper alone. We do not know who made it, who owned it, whether it was actually used in combat, or whether it also served a ceremonial or prestige role; given its decoration, it probably combined practical function with display.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual fact: what survives is only the metal head. The wooden shaft that would have passed through the central socket has disappeared, completely changing how long, heavy, and usable the weapon once felt in the hand.

I focus on the patina, the green and brown covering the dark bronze. The polished highlights along the edges show where the metal was most worked, while the matte and rough areas reveal corrosion from more than three thousand years. I am intrigued by the fine cracks on the rear disc and the incised decoration: those parallel bands by the socket and the chain of interlaced spirals fading toward the cutting edge. It is not just wear, it is the history of the material telling how it was cast and cared for.

This axe makes me think of deep time, like looking at stars whose light traveled for centuries. It is from around 1500 B.C., from the Bronze Age, found in Hungary and now housed in Cleveland. Its diagonal suspended form looks like a constellation: disc, hollow cylinder for a missing handle and a curved blade widening toward the blunt edge. The engraved spirals remind me of orbits, repeating cycles, as if the maker wanted to capture the movement of the heavens in metal.

It looks like a tiny spaceship flying diagonally! It has a big circle at the back like a shield and a little tube in the middle where a wooden handle used to go and now is gone. The point gets bigger toward the right, but it looks blunt, not so sharp. It is green with brown and shines a bit on the edges. I like that it has little drawings of lines and swirly snails, as if someone decorated it to look pretty and powerful at the same time.

It is the long piece that allowed holding and using the axe, now absent and only the socket remains.
