What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal black-and-white etching depicting a calm mill pond bordered by dense vegetation. The lower half is occupied by water that mirrors reeds, shrubs and trees from both banks with fine horizontal and cross-hatched lines; the water appears dark near the edges and bright and luminous in the center where a pale channel opens. In the immediate foreground on the right, tall clumps of reeds and grasses are rendered with wiry, energetic lines and heavily inked patches; among them a bird with outstretched wings is caught just as it takes flight. On the right bank, a compact, almost solid black mass of foliage and tree crowns contrasts strongly with the empty, pale sky above. On the left, thatched-roof cottages, reeds and two tall, slender poplars stand out against the horizon. In the distance, between more lightly sketched trees with airy, open strokes, chimneys and village houses are faintly suggested. Light is diffuse without harsh shadows, and texture shifts from the delicate hatching of the water to the dense, scribbled network of foliage. In the lower right corner the handwritten signature Seymour Haden 1860 is visible. The print retains the rectangular plate mark with slightly irregular edges on off-white paper.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central reflection in the water that leads the eye toward the bright background between the two banks. Then contrast the heavy black clump of trees on the right with the light, open handling of the sky and the tall poplars on the left. Pause on the bird among the reeds in the right foreground; its small movement breaks the stillness and reveals the intimate scale of the pond.
ContextContexto
This is Shere Mill Pond, No. 11 (The Large Plate) by Francis Seymour Haden (British, 1818–1910), dated 1860 and later, as recorded by the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held as part of the Bequest of Mrs. Severance A. Millikin. The technique is etching and drypoint, central to the 19th-century Etching Revival in England. Haden, a surgeon and prominent etcher, championed direct observation from nature and the artistic value of original prints. The work belongs to the Prints department and shows an English rural landscape, likely in Surrey, built on contrasts between heavily inked areas and untouched paper reserves.

If you look closely at the paper you will see the plate rectangle with slightly irregular edges on light paper. I focus on the contrast between heavily inked areas and reserves of white. The water is built with horizontal and cross-hatched strokes, darker near the banks and brighter in the center where a channel of light opens. The foliage on the right is a compact mass with very dense ink, while the background becomes light and diffuse. That range of textures is typical of etching and drypoint.

This empty pale sky reminds me of an observation at dawn. There are no hard shadows, only diffuse light reflected in the pond as if it were a dark mirror. The water fills the lower half and holds the reflection of reeds and trees, paler in the center. On the right dense foliage frames the scene like a night horizon, and on the left two slender poplars stand out like needles against the horizon. It is a landscape that invites you to wait and watch patiently, as when searching for something in the sky.

Look at the water! It looks like someone scribbled all over the surface with a pencil and left a path of light in the middle. On the right there are lots of reeds with sketchy lines and among them a bird with open wings about to fly away. On the other side there are thatched cottages and two very tall skinny poplars like pencils. In the back you can see tiny houses and chimneys among the trees. Everything is in black and white and it feels calm, as if no one is making a sound.
