What you would seeLo que verías

A wide, light-filled countryside stretches under a pale, almost empty sky tinged with soft blue and touched by low, billowy gray clouds near the horizon. On the left, a large ruined brick building commands attention: broken walls in warm reds and tans, open arches, a collapsed upper story and small empty windows, all softened by tufts of green and olive scrub growing from the masonry. Delicate watercolor washes suggest rough texture, peeling plaster and sun-bleached stone around a small rose window above a dark arched doorway. In the foreground a narrow earthy path winds through green grass and sketchy shrubbery. A shepherd in a dark hat, brown coat and bluish trousers bends forward, both hands resting on a small black shaggy dog, his staff propped beside him. Nearby a white and tan cow grazes with head low, surrounded by several woolly sheep with creamy and light gray fleeces, some standing, some lying down. In the middle distance more cattle and sheep dot a grassy rise, while far to the right a covered wagon, horses, a distant windmill and gentle hills fade into hazy light, creating a calm, pastoral depth.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the jagged silhouette of the brick ruin against the sky and trace how vines soften its edges. Then move to the intimate pair of shepherd and dog in the foreground, and see how the scattered grazing animals lead the eye toward the distant wagon and windmill.

ContextContexto

This is a work by Dutch artist Jacob Cats (1741–1799), dated 1799, held in the Drawings Department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to museum data, the medium is watercolor, point of brush and watercolor, and pen and brown ink over black chalk, with framing lines in brown ink and brown wash. The specific ruin depicted is not identified and is probably an idealized, picturesque motif rather than a topographical record, typical of late 18th-century Dutch pastoral taste that valued tranquil rural life and the poetry of decay. The sheet came as part of the Bequest of Mrs. Severance A. Millikin.

I pause on what time has left both on the ruin and on the paper. I see the reddish brick with peeling plaster, the ivy colonizing incomplete arches and empty windows. I notice the brown wash and brown pen and ink over the black chalk underdrawing, with loose brushstrokes in the grass and shrubs. The pale light of the sky and the yellowish green patches speak to me of a delicate work, made to contemplate the trace of time with calm.

I look at the sky and I am struck by how empty and luminous it feels. It is a pale sky, almost without stars, with low grayish clouds toward the horizon, very different from a dark night. That diffused brightness lights the whole plain and clearly reveals the reddish ruin, the earthy path and the resting herd. It reminds me how the light of dusk or a cloudy day can also be beautiful, serene and perfect for observing the landscape carefully.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I really like the little black dog because the shepherd is petting it with both hands and you can tell they love each other. I also like the fluffy beige and gray sheep, some are lying down resting and others are standing. The spotted cow looks calm. The big brick ruin looks like a broken castle with little plants growing in the windows. The path goes through the green grass and in the back you can see a wagon and a very tiny windmill. Everything looks peaceful.
