As a conservator I focus on how Isaac de Moucheron built light with black pen and ink and warm gray washes, with white gouache highlights that give volume to the Corinthian columns and the vases on the attic. I am intrigued by the faint blue touch in the background and the warm-toned paper breathing between washes. Every stippled treetop and the thin jet from the sphinx fountain shows delicate brush control that we still must protect from overexposure to light.

As an amateur astronomer I look at this 1713 harbor and think about the pearly diffused light bathing the baroque colonnade and the balustrades stepping down to the water. There is no strong sun, just a pale sky with very faint blue suggesting a calm morning for sailing. I like to imagine the moored sailing ships waiting for wind and travelers with laden horses guided by that soft brightness that reveals mountains and ruins in the distance like constellations on the horizon.

I love this drawing because it looks like a giant city made for playing! On the left there is a huge palace with columns and vases on top, and a funny-faced sphinx spitting water like a fountain. There are lots of tiny people, a little dog, horses carrying bundles, small boats and tall trees with dotted tops. I would look for the mom with her child and the beggar sitting on the steps. Can you imagine running across those terraces all the way to the sea?
