What you would seeLo que verías

Shown frontally against a plain grey background, this is a small vertical tablet shaped like a miniature classical building. It has side pilasters, a triangular pediment at the top, and a decorated base, all made in silver with extensive gilding. At the very top there is a small hanging ring flanked by curved, teardrop-like forms. Inside the pediment, God the Father appears with abundant hair and beard, arms outstretched, accompanied by a cherub; both look downward. The central gilded panel is framed by silver pilasters covered in dense, rope-like interlacing. In the middle sits the Madonna with a radiate halo, head bowed and eyes lowered, her long wavy hair and heavy drapery rendered in fine folds. She holds her dress at her chest with one hand. On her lap, the naked Christ Child twists outward, one small arm extended and the other clutching her clothing. Around them crowd small heads and figures in lower relief: Saint Joseph behind, saints at both sides, and two angels with wreaths above. Along the bottom runs a frieze of palmettes, broken in the center by a shield with raised balls, the Medici arms. Worn silver, warm gold, pitted textures and polished highlights give the surface an aged, tactile quality.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the contrast between silver and gold, then move from the lowest relief at the edges toward the Madonna and Child, who project the furthest. Look up to the pediment to find God the Father watching over the scene, then down to the shield at the base. Finally, notice the small saintly heads at the sides: some gaze at the holy family, others upward.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a pax made after 1506 by the Italian artist known as Moderno (1467–1528). A pax was a small flat tablet with Christian images, kissed by the priest before Communion. It is made of silver and gilt silver and comes from Italy. At the bottom center, a shield bears the Medici coat of arms, suggesting a link to that family, although the exact patron and original place of use are not known from the source information. It is now in the European Painting and Sculpture department, bequeathed by Mrs. Severance A. Millikin.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: the depth of the carving works like a ranking system — the saints are in low relief, Joseph in higher relief, and the Madonna and Child project the most, guiding the eye straight to them.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the changing depth of relief shape the way we rank the figures spiritually and visually?¿Cómo cambia nuestra lectura espiritual y visual de las figuras según la profundidad del relieve?
  2. What changes when a sacred image is made not only to be seen, but to be kissed and held?¿Qué pasa cuando una imagen sagrada está hecha no solo para mirarse, sino también para besarse y sostenerse?
  3. What might the Medici shield, placed at the viewer's feet rather than at the center, say about devotion and family identity?¿Qué puede decir el escudo Medici, colocado a los pies y no en el centro, sobre la devoción y la identidad familiar?

I focus on how this pax was made, that small tablet the priest would kiss. It is silver with gilded areas, and you can see wear from handling and polishing. The central gilded panel contrasts with the silver pilasters, which have a very fine interlaced pattern like rope. I am struck by the relief: the Madonna and Child project boldly with deep drapery folds, while the saints and angels stay lower, almost like a whisper. Below, the Medici shield with its raised balls and the band of palmettes show the goldsmith’s care.

I see this little plaque as a portable temple. It has pilasters, a triangular pediment and a base, like a classical facade in miniature. At the top, by the small hanging ring, I imagine how it would catch candlelight. Up in the pediment, God the Father with open arms seems to embrace everything, with a cherub beside him, both looking down. The Madonna has a radiant halo like a soft sun. Everything is ordered in levels, from heaven above to the holy family in the center and the shield below, like aligned constellations.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a shiny little house for tiny characters! At the top there is a man with a big beard and open arms, like saying hello everyone! In the middle there is the lady with a dress full of little lines and a glow around her head, hugging her baby with no clothes who is stretching one little arm. Around them there are more hidden faces, like they are peeking out, and two little angels with crowns. Down below there is a small shield with little balls. I like that it is all golden and silvery and has a tiny ring to hang it like a giant necklace.
