A vertically oriented oval plaque is shown frontally against a smooth, neutral gray background under even studio light that emphasizes its relief. At the center, a bust in left profile of a young woman fills almost the entire field. Her head is slightly lifted, with a straight nose, delicate chin and slender neck. Her hair is full and wavy, swept back with dynamic curls that suggest movement, and a small crescent-like ornament rests near the forehead. She wears a softly draped tunic gathered at the chest, covering the shoulder. Just behind neck and shoulder a quiver with arrows protrudes, the traditional attribute of Diana the huntress. The surface is gilt bronze, with worn gilding that exposes the darker metal beneath, especially on cheek, neck, shoulder and rim. Dark patches of corrosion and brown-green patina speckle the gold. The oval has a plain raised border and two small circular holes at top and bottom, likely for suspension or attachment. In the foreground the relief is crisp and tactile with deep undercutting in hair and drapery; the background remains empty and out of focus, making this small, handheld-scale object read like a jewel or furniture mount.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the profile and the animated hair, which gives a sense of wind and energy. Then move to the quiver behind the shoulder, the small clue that points to Diana. Finally notice the uneven gilding and the two mounting holes, traces of its age and original function.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a gilt bronze sculpture dated about 1500 and associated with northern Italy in the 16th century. The maker is unknown. The title proposes a tentative identification as Diana, Roman goddess of the hunt, because of the quiver behind the shoulder, but that identification is not confirmed. No further description is given in the source record. The work belongs to the European Painting and Sculpture department and entered the collection as part of the Bequest of Mrs. Severance A. Millikin. The format, an oval plaque with mounting holes, probably indicates it was a decorative appliqué or part of a larger ensemble, a common type among Renaissance bronze plaquettes in northern Italy.

Curious detailDato curioso

The golden surface is not paint but fire-gilding on bronze, a luxury technique prized in Renaissance Italy for small bronzes; the patchy wear that reveals the dark alloy underneath is characteristic of objects handled and displayed for centuries.

I focus on the material: it is a gilt bronze from northern Italy, around 1500, and what I see is time layered on metal. The gilding is worn on the cheeks, neck, shoulder and edges, revealing the dark bronze beneath. There is brown and greenish patina and spots of oxidation that speak of its age. The relief is crisp, the oval border is raised and there are two holes at top and bottom for mounting. It was a small, portable ornamental applique, made to be touched and seen up close.

That profile takes me to the night sky. The woman faces left, her hair flowing as if blown by the wind, with a crescent-shaped adornment on her forehead. Behind her shoulder appears the quiver with arrows, which is why she is thought to possibly be Diana, the huntress linked to the moon. The identification is not certain, but the lunar symbol fits. I imagine this small oval plaque shining like a tiny gilded moon when the bronze still kept all its gold.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant medal of a huntress princess! She is shown sideways and her hair has lots of little waves, as if she were running super fast. She wears a dress with soft folds and behind her she carries her little box of arrows for hunting. It is golden but in some parts it looks brownish and greenish, as if it were a bit old. It has two little holes at the top and bottom to hang it. I like to imagine it was used to decorate a treasure chest.
