What you would seeLo que verías
A ceramic pillow is shown in three-quarter view against a background that fades from black at the top to soft gray below. Its upper part is a broad, smooth, gently concave slab, like a shallow saddle or an upturned leaf, wider than the body beneath it and lifting slightly at both ends. It rests on the back of a stocky, lion-like animal standing on four short, powerful legs. The creature faces right, its large head turned toward the viewer, with a wrinkled muzzle, flaring nostrils, bared fangs, furrowed brows, rounded ears, and a curling mane rendered in small raised bumps. A striated beard hangs below its jaw. Its paws spread wide, each toe and claw carefully modeled, giving it a planted, guarding stance. The animal stands on an irregular flat plinth pierced by two dark oval openings between its legs. The whole surface is covered in a creamy off-white glaze mottled with tan and light brown, with fine crackling and worn, slightly rough patches along edges. Soft studio light models the curves, leaves the underside in shadow, and emphasizes the contrast between the sleek, empty headrest and the expressive, almost comical ferocity below.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Look first at the wide, calm curve of the top, then drop to the lion's snarling face underneath it: comfort rests literally on fierceness. Notice its planted paws and the small pierced openings in the plinth, which lighten a solid-looking piece. From the side, the contrast between the smooth headrest and the modeled, weathered body becomes clearest.
ContextContexto
The source identifies this work as Pillow with Lion Base, by an unknown maker, dated to the 1000s, from China under the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127). It is glazed stoneware in qingbai, or "blue-white," ware, and belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it arrived as a bequest of Mrs. Severance A. Millikin. Ceramic pillows were known in Song-dynasty China; their cool, hard surfaces were probably appreciated especially in warm weather, although no specific user or place of use is recorded for this example. The lion likely added a protective, auspicious presence. Its exact kiln, owner, and original setting are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Despite its name, qingbai ware often appears almost white; its very pale blue tint shows most clearly where the translucent glaze pools, a subtle effect that here is softened by the warm, aged-looking beige surface.

I focus on the creamy glaze mottled with toasted and light brown tones, with that fine crackle running across the whole surface. Notice the tactile contrast between the smooth, concave headrest, meant to support the head, and the lion's body modeled with bumps, wrinkles and well defined claws. I see wear and roughness along the edges, signs of time passing on this 11th century qingbai stoneware. The base pierced with two oval openings also tells me about its firing and how it has been preserved.

I imagine this pillow in the heat of a Song summer, cool to the touch like shade. Its upper slab is like a small concave moon, empty and smooth, ready to receive dreams. Below, the guardian lion keeps its eyes open, with a furrowed brow and visible fangs, watching over rest. Against a background black above and soft gray below, the piece seems to float between night and dawn. For me it joins the everyday and the cosmic: a head support that was also a protective charm.

It looks like the lion is doing squats with a little tray on its back! It has a grumpy but funny face, with a wrinkled snout, round little ears and a mane made of little bumps like popcorn. Its legs are short and strong and you can see its claws. On top there is the smooth and curved pillow, like a tiny slide for your head. It is creamy colored with light brown spots and a bit rough on the edges. I like how it looks right at you even though its body faces another way.
