What you would seeLo que verías
A densely worked black-and-white etching in horizontal format. At center, three nude goddesses with wavy hair and wreaths stand before Paris, a youthful shepherd seated at right wearing a fur-trimmed cloak and cap, holding out an apple toward the middle figure. Behind him a tree holds a large lyre, and beneath it several nymphs recline. In the foreground a small winged Cupid with a quiver looks up at the exchange, while a hound lies at Paris feet. At left, seen from the back, a muscular male figure draped in cloth holds a bag and turns away, hand to his face. Lower left, by a reedy pond with swans and ducks, two bearded river gods recline half-naked among reeds, one gripping an oar, watching the scene. The background is an elaborate landscape of rolling hills, dense trees, a thatched cottage and a winding river fading into the distance. Light is even and graphic, with no heavy chiaroscuro, and texture comes from etched cross-hatching, stippling and fine linear nets that model flesh, foliage and water.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central apple being offered and follow the exchanged glances between Paris and the goddesses. Then look to the edges, the river gods below and the tiny distant landscape, to see how a private contest becomes a world-shaping event.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is an etching from about 1545 by Jean Mignon, active about 1535 to 1555, reproducing a design by Luca Penni, an Italian painter active at the Palace of Fontainebleau. It belongs to the brief flourishing of printmaking at Fontainebleau in the 1540s, which had ended by 1547. Mignon was one of four major etchers associated with the workshop, and almost all his prints copy Penni. The composition derives from Marcantonio Raimondi famous engraving after Raphael. It shows the shepherd Paris asked to judge which of the three goddesses, Juno, Minerva or Venus, is the fairest, a mythological beauty contest that leads to the Trojan War.

Curious detailDato curioso
The Fontainebleau version is not an invention from life but a creative copy of Marcantonio Raimondi engraving after Raphael, a print that became the standard image of the Judgment of Paris across Europe.

I linger on the etching texture, that dense and crowded web of cross-hatching and stippling that builds volume without deep shadows. I see how the black ink on the pale paper models skin, foliage and the water of the pond with swans. I think about the plate from around 1545 etched by Jean Mignon after a drawing by Luca Penni for Fontainebleau, during its brief boom in the 1540s. I wonder how the even light and the mannerist texture have survived so well for almost five centuries.

I read the landscape like a miniature sky vault, with hills, a winding river and a cottage in the background ordering space like constellations. At the center, the small drama of the shepherd Paris holding the apple before the three goddesses reminds me of those alignments where a single point defines destiny. I love to imagine the Fontainebleau workshop in 1545 copying Raphael through Raimondi, repeating a composition like tracing a known orbit. Everything is even, with no deep night, like a midday sky.

So many things are happening at once! I see three ladies with no clothes and little wreaths on their heads standing in front of a young man with a little hat offering them an apple. Below there is a baby with little wings and a quiver watching everything, and a little dog lying by the young man's legs. On the left a muscular man covers his face and walks away. In the back there is a river with ducklings and swans, two bearded men lying among reeds and a lyre hanging from a tree. I want to count everything!
