What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows both sides of a single sheet of paper with an irregular, pendentive-shaped cut at the bottom, curving inward. The support is an aged, creamy beige with subtle staining and softly wavy edges, drawn on with red chalk. On the recto, on the left, three studies of a putto-like angel, nude with a fluttering drape and outspread wings, fill most of the surface. The largest angel, upper left, has one arm raised high and the other outstretched, its body strongly foreshortened; a red chalk grid overlays the figure and a faint triangular framing line marks the architectural space. To its right, a smaller study repeats the pose with slight shifts in twist and gaze. At the bottom center, a third, even smaller angel opens both arms upward. The linework is energetic yet controlled, with hatching to model plump limbs, curly hair and feathery wings. On the verso, on the right, fainter sketches appear: at the top, a framed group locked in an embrace, and along the bottom edge, a row of tiny angels in acrobatic, diving poses fitted inside triangular compartments, with barely legible notes and smudges that show the sheet’s working nature.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large angel on the upper left and see how the grid contains its twisting body within the triangle. Compare the three versions to notice how Roncalli adjusts foreshortening, wing span and drapery. Then turn to the verso and observe how the lighter, smaller sketches reveal the sheet as a working laboratory of ideas.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a preparatory drawing by Cristoforo Roncalli (1552–1626), made between 1599 and 1604 for the mosaic decoration inside the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The dome, designed by Michelangelo, was completed in 1590, a generation after his death, and in 1597 Pope Clement VIII commissioned its interior decoration. Roncalli, trained in Florence like Michelangelo, was chosen in part for that shared background. The recto holds three studies for the angels that flank the four Evangelists in the pendentives, the trapezoidal spaces where the dome meets its supporting arches, with squaring in red chalk to transfer the design to full scale. The verso contains additional studies, including ones for Christ Meeting His Mother on the Road to Calvary.

Curious detailDato curioso

The squared grid in red chalk was a practical tool to enlarge the small drawing accurately onto the vast curved surface of the basilica’s pendentive for the mosaicists to follow.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the foreshortening make the angels feel as if they are floating above you?¿Cómo cambia la sensación de movimiento entre los tres ángeles si imaginas verlos desde abajo, a gran altura?
  2. What does the presence of multiple versions on one sheet tell you about the artist’s design process?¿Para qué crees que servía la cuadrícula roja y qué nos dice sobre el paso del dibujo pequeño al mosaico monumental?
  3. How does seeing both front and back of the paper change your understanding of a Renaissance preparatory drawing?¿Qué relación ves entre los bocetos tenues del reverso y el estudio más acabado del anverso?

I focus on the material. This aged creamy sheet is cut with a curve at the bottom to fit the pendentive and its wavy edges show light age spots. With red chalk Roncalli drew three angel-children with wings and fluttering drapery, using shading to model muscles and curly hair. What moves me most is the red grid over the largest angel, the tool to enlarge the design for the mosaic without losing proportion, and the lines forming the inverted triangle of the architectural space.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this sheet as a map to touch the sky. St Peter's dome, finished in 1590, is a celestial vault and these pendentives are the corners where the square becomes round. Roncalli draws angels in foreshortening, as if floating in zero gravity, with spread wings and open arms. The red grid reminds me of coordinates to locate stars. Those three studies are flight rehearsals to inhabit an inverted triangle between huge arches.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like three babies with wings playing at flying. The biggest one is at the top with one arm raised as if saying look at me! Another one beside him is smaller doing the same pose and the one below opens both arms to the sky. I like their curly hair and the little cloth flying in the wind. The sheet is not rectangular, the bottom is cut in a curve like a smile and it has little red lines on top that look like a small net.

  1. #1

On the front of the sheet, how many studies of the winged child-angel are drawn in red chalk?

    HintPista

Look at the main side of the creamy sheet, count the winged figures with fluttering drapery, one large on top, another small on the right and one below in the center.

  2. #2

What color is the grid drawn over the largest angel to enlarge it for the mosaic?

    HintPista

Look for the lines forming squares over the angel at the top left, it is the same tone as the whole drawing.

  3. #3

At the bottom, what shape is the trimmed edge of the sheet to fit the architecture of the pendentive?

    HintPista

Observe the lower contour of the creamy sheet, it is not straight, it follows the shape of the inverted triangular space between arches.
