What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal black-and-white print showing a detailed wooded landscape. In the left-center foreground a striking blasted tree trunk dominates: pale, leafless, with gnarled bark and broken branches reaching upward like arms, surrounded by dense underbrush, grasses and shrubs along the bank of a small stream or pool with dark, shaded water. Behind it a thick grove of mature trees with dark, leafy crowns fills the left side, rendered with countless fine lines to suggest foliage filtering light. Toward the center and right the woods open onto a winding dirt path that curves between lighter trees and low bushes into the distance. Two tiny human figures walk the path, one apparently carrying a bundle or using a staff, providing a sense of scale. The upper third is a broad sky filled with large, billowy cumulus clouds modeled with delicate hatching, with small flocks of birds in flight. Light is soft yet dramatic, contrasting deep shadows in the foliage with the bright white of the dead trunk and cloud tops. The overall texture is distinctly etched: cross-hatching, stippling and roulette work create velvety tonal gradations, surrounded by a pale aged paper margin.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the pale, broken trunk in the foreground, the brightest form, then follow the winding path back toward the two tiny walkers. Notice how dark foliage against soft, voluminous clouds builds depth, and how thousands of tiny etched strokes create every leaf and water reflection.

ContextContexto

Source data lists the work as Groups of Various Plants Drawn After Nature: No. 7, credited to Eugène Bléry (French, 1805–1886) and after Meindert Hobbema (Dutch, 1638–1709), dated 1855, French 19th-century culture, technique etching, roulette and engraving on paper. It is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, Prints department, John L. Severance Fund. No further description is given in the source. It is probably a 19th-century etched interpretation by Bléry after a composition by Hobbema, a common practice when artists studied and revived 17th-century Dutch masters in natural history and landscape series. The exact publication context of the series is not known from the available data.

Curious detailDato curioso

Eugène Bléry was celebrated in 19th-century France for his etching skill en plein air in the Forest of Fontainebleau, and he often used the roulette tool to achieve the soft, velvety grays visible in the foliage and sky here.

This print makes me think about craftsmanship. I see the paper with its light margins and the contrast between deep black and the white of the dry trunk. Bléry used etching, roulette and engraving to create thousands of lines and dots that give volume to the clouds and bark. I pause on the whitish trunk in the foreground, so detailed you feel you could touch the cracked wood. It is patient work where every tone was carefully built.

I look first at the sky that fills the upper third. It is full of voluminous clouds modeled with shading and highlights, and there is even a tiny flock of birds. The light is diffuse and dramatic, filtering through the dark canopies on the left and making the dead trunk stand out as if lit. For me that cloudy sky recalls how light transforms a landscape and how nineteenth-century artists studied nature with as much attention as we observe the stars.

Wow! That trunk in the middle looks like a monster with stretched arms and no leaves. It is next to a little stream with lots of grass. I like searching for the two tiny people walking on the dirt path, they look like little ants next to the huge trees. In the back there are many dark trees and ahead the forest opens up. Up above the sky has puffy clouds and little birds flying. Everything is made with just little black lines but it looks like a real forest.

¡Wow!
