What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal black-and-white engraving shows a fortress under assault, crowded from edge to edge with bodies, weapons, and architecture. On the left and in the center rises a massive stone city: cylindrical towers, crenellated walls, and narrow openings built from clearly outlined blocks. Defenders crowd the rooftops, leaning over parapets, gesturing, and pushing back attackers. Several soldiers climb ladders against the towers; in the left foreground, two nearly nude men seen from behind pull themselves upward, muscles and bare buttocks rendered with fine parallel lines. Below, the foreground is a tangle of helmets, round shields, spears, fallen ladders, and straining arms. At the center, a huge billowing banner swells like a sail, next to a dragon-shaped standard held above the melee. To the right, the fighting spills over rocks and trees toward a hilly landscape filled with dense troops, smaller fortifications, and distant groups on winding paths. The light is created only by line and cross-hatching: bright paper for skin, cloth, and stone, deep blacks for shadows and foliage. Tiny inscriptions appear on the tower and on a tablet at the bottom center. The scale shifts abruptly from monumental bodies at lower left to tiny soldiers on the horizon.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin at the lower left, where ladders and raised arms set the assault in motion, then climb visually with the soldiers toward the tower. Pause at the large billowing banner and dragon standard in the center: they split the attackers below from the defenders above. Finally, move right into the distant landscape, where the crowd shrinks into orderly lines of troops and the panic becomes strategy.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, The Siege of Carthage is an engraving dated 1539, made in Germany and credited to Georg Pencz (c. 1500–1550), working from a design by the Italian artist Giulio Romano (1492/99–1546). No source description accompanies the file, so the specific episode represented is not documented here. Carthage, the ancient North African city repeatedly at war with Rome, was likely understood by sixteenth-century viewers as a classical siege subject, probably a Roman assault. The combination of a German printmaker and an Italian designer reflects the wide circulation of Renaissance models through prints.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail is the long dragon-shaped standard curving through the center: amid shields and spears, its open mouth and wind-filled body almost seem alive and taking part in the fight.

I focus on how the hatching is built: each stone block of the wall, each muscle of the climbing men, is made with very fine parallel lines. The light paper you see is the base color, tone #e9dec9, and all the volume comes from the black crosshatching. This horizontal print is packed edge to edge, so your eye never rests. Look at the assault ladders: some steady against the towers, others fallen among shields and spears. That tangle is intentional, it shows the chaos of the siege without needing any color.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What fascinates me is the shift in scale, like a zoom effect. In the foreground you see huge bodies, almost nude, modeled with light and shadow only through hatching, and in the background, toward the hills on the right, soldiers become tiny dots among rocks and trees. It is a landscape full of tiny troops on paths and smaller forts. That depth is achieved without color, only with line density: deep blacks for foliage and pale lines for distant stone.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are so many people fighting everywhere! On the left two men with no clothes climb a ladder and you can see their muscles and bottoms. Up on the crenellated towers more men lean over pushing. In the middle there is a giant flag that looks like a sail puffed by wind and next to it a dragon on a pole. Down below everything is jumbled with helmets, round shields and fallen spears. If you look far away, to the right, you see more tiny little soldiers among hills.

  1. #1

In the middle of the turmoil, what large object waves and puffs like a sail next to the dragon insignia?

    HintPista

Look for the huge cloth in the center that looks puffed by wind.

  2. #2

What shape are the shields seen scattered and raised in the foreground tangle?

    HintPista

Look among spears and helmets below for the protective objects.

  3. #3

How many almost nude men seen from behind strain to climb the ladder in the left foreground?

    HintPista

Look at the lower left corner, climbing the ladder leaning against the tower.
