What you would seeLo que verías

This is a square-format painting on silk in warm, muted tones, surrounded by a speckled cream and gold border. The background is a wash of ochre and pale beige suggesting mist or dawn sky, overlaid with large, soft-edged washes of diluted grey ink that drift like distant clouds or mountains. In the right foreground, a dense, dark mass of black ink forms a cliff and a grove of pines; the brushwork is swift and wet, with feathered edges that let the silk texture show through, and drier, spiky touches for pine needles. The shoreline extends leftward as small, dark islets dissolving into haze. Over the barely indicated water, rendered in the palest washes, a flock of about ten tiny birds flies in simple V-shaped black strokes. At the lower right, a vertical calligraphic signature in black ink and a small square red seal anchor the composition. Light is soft and diffuse, without sharp shadows, and the scale is intimate, made for close viewing as an album leaf.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the bold black mass of the cliff on the right and trace its ragged edge into the pine cluster. Then let your eye drift into the grey washes of the background before returning to the tiny flock of birds, whose flight opens up the mist. Notice how the empty golden space is as important as the inked forms.

ContextContexto

According to source data, this work is a leaf from an accordion-style album titled Album of Paintings by the Venerable Zeshin, executed in 1847 by Shibata Zeshin (Japanese, 1807–1891) during the Edo period (1615–1868). Curious detailDato curioso

Shibata Zeshin was largely self-taught and later became an Imperial artist, yet this early 1847 album leaf already displays his daring, economical brushwork that can evoke a whole shoreline with just a few strokes.

The conservatorLa restauradora

What holds my attention is how fragile the support is. This is ink, color and gold on silk, a leaf from an 1847 accordion album made to be viewed up close and handled page by page. I see very diluted washes in ochre and grey that let the silk weave breathe, next to loaded, wet brushstrokes for the cliff and the little pine grove on the right. The calligraphic signature and the red square seal at the bottom balance everything. The mottled cream and gold border reminds us this is an intimate object that must be protected from light.

I look at this landscape as if it were a sky at dawn. The ochre and beige background, with those grey blots like clouds or distant mountains in mist, makes me think of diffuse light before sunrise, with no hard shadows. On the right the dark mass of the cliff anchors the view, like a horizon line. And over the pale water, that flock of about ten birds drawn with just two strokes in a V looks like a moving constellation. It is Shibata Zeshin playing with emptiness and fullness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the birds are playing hide and seek in the fog. I count about ten tiny birds made with two little black lines flying over the very light water. On the right there is a black cliff with lots of pine trees that looks like a sleeping monster next to the shore. The little islands get blurrier farther away, as if they were dissolving. Everything is so soft, with no strong sun. I like the little red square of the seal, it looks like the artist’s secret stamp.

If you look closely at the misty sky, how many tiny V-shaped birds fly over the pale water?

    HintPista

Look above the water for very simple black strokes, like tiny check marks.

  2. #2

In the lower right corner there is a detail that balances the painting, what color and shape is the artist’s seal?

    HintPista

It is next to the vertical calligraphic signature, a little touch of intense color.

  3. #3

What kind of trees make up the dark little grove on the cliff on the right?

    HintPista

They are in black ink, with brushstrokes that suggest needles, very typical of Japanese landscape.
