What you would seeLo que verías

The object is centered against a smooth, medium-gray background that isolates it. It is a small, upright cast-gold pendant shaped as a highly stylized crocodilian or saurian head seen from the front. The main body is a hollow cylinder with a rough, hammered and granular surface in warm golden tones ranging from bright yellow to deep ochre where shadow falls. At the top, a tubular snout projects with two large, hollow circular eyes and a short upturned nose between them. Above the brow sits a jagged crest and a headdress-like band decorated with tiny zigzag patterns. Small rectangular gold plaques hang from loops on the sides, top and bottom; their thin, slightly bent sheets have irregular edges and would have tinkled when worn. Minute hands with incised fingers appear on either side of the snout. Frontal lighting creates sharp highlights on polished rims and deep shadows inside the eye tubes and under the crest, emphasizing texture. Fitted into the bottom of the gold cylinder is a large, smooth, polished oval bead of intense emerald green, glassy and translucent, whose sleek surface contrasts strongly with the porous, grainy metal. The scale appears intimate and wearable, a few centimeters tall, like chest jewelry.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the tubular eyes and upturned nose to read the hybrid face, then move up to the crested headdress and the dangling plaques. Notice how the glossy green inlay changes the balance against the rough gold and imagine it with a shell or different stone.

ContextContexto

This is a cast-gold pendant assigned to the Parita style of the Azuero Peninsula in Panama, dated 1000–1550 CE, circa 11th to 16th century, held in the Art of the Americas department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The museum notes that hybrid beings combining crocodile features, especially the mouth, with lizard traits such as the iguana head crest were of great importance in ancient Panama; this example also shows a back-swept nose possibly taken from the leaf-nosed bat. The greenstone at the base is a modern replacement for a stone or shell that once completed the body. The maker is unknown, as is common for this period.

Curious detailDato curioso

The deep green inlay is not original; the museum records it as a modern replacement for the stone or shell that once formed the lower part of the crocodile body, revealing how restorations shape how we see ancient goldwork today.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Which animals can you trace in this composite face and what power might such mixing have conveyed?¿Qué animales logras reconocer en este rostro híbrido y por qué mezclarlos pudo tener poder simbólico?
  2. How would a different inlay material, such as shell or a different colored stone, alter the meaning of the pendant?¿Cómo cambiaría tu percepción del colgante si la piedra verde fuera blanca, roja o translúcida como una concha?
  3. What movement and sound do the small hanging plaques suggest about how this object was worn and experienced?¿Qué sonidos y movimientos imaginas cuando las plaquitas de oro colgantes se balancean sobre el pecho de quien lo porta?

I focus on technique and the passage of time. I see the hollow cylinder of cast gold with its rough hammered surface, where light leaves intense highlights and deep shadows. I am drawn to those rectangular hanging plates held by rings, some slightly bent, which surely jingled when walking. I also notice the large translucent emerald green bead at the base, and I remember it is a modern replacement, because the original stone or shell was lost. It is a small, intimate jewel made to last for centuries.

This golden crocodile reminds me of a portable constellation. Its tubular snout and hollow eyes are like craters staring forward, and the toothed crest on its head looks like a jagged mountain range cut against the sky. The contrast between the porous gold and the polished green stone below is like the Sun and a planet seen together. Dated between the 11th and 16th centuries in the Azuero Peninsula, this hybrid of crocodile, iguana and perhaps leaf-nosed bat would have shone like an amulet under the stars.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a funny shiny monster! It has little empty circle eyes and a long tube snout with a tiny upturned nose. On top it wears a little crown with spikes and zigzag patterns, and on the sides little gold plates hang that jingle if you move, like little bells. At the bottom it has a big smooth green stone that shines like mint candy. It is tiny, just the right size to hang around your neck, and if you shake it I bet it goes jingle jingle.
