pale green jade
What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontally oriented, elongated object shown in profile against a smooth, dark charcoal-gray background that isolates its form and faintly reflects no shadow, emphasizing volume and surface. The piece is a gently tapered cylinder carved from pale, milky green jade with creamy mottling and brownish earth deposits in the recesses, its surface polished to a soft, waxy luster yet weathered with fine pitting. At the left end a stylized serpent head emerges with an open snout: the upper jaw shows a rounded nostril tip, the lower jaw is parted to reveal a rectangular gap, and a round incised eye with a central dot sits just behind the muzzle. Along the body, which forms the handle, a continuous row of five or six low-relief spiral or ring-and-dot motifs runs down the side, each a concentric circle with a drilled center suggesting stylized scales, their grooves darkened by age. The right end thickens slightly and is cinched by two incised bands forming a terminal collar. Even, diffuse lighting catches the gentle sheen of the stone and the tactile quality of the carving.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin at the serpent head on the left and let your eye glide along the row of spirals to the collared butt to read the handle as a stretched body. Pause on the repeated ring-and-dot pattern and the way light pools in each drilled center, because that rhythm organizes the whole piece. Finish at the open mouth and incised eye, where a simple cylinder becomes a creature.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a serpent-form fan handle (?) attributed to the Mixtec culture of Central Mexico, dated to 900–1519 CE, carved in pale green jade and classified as sculpture. The maker is unknown and no specific findspot is recorded; the source information comes solely from the museum credit as a gift of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Gruener. In Mesoamerica jade was a highly valued material linked to water, life and elite status, and the serpent was a widespread motif, but the precise function of this handle type remains uncertain, as indicated by the question mark in the title. No further description is provided by the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
Mesoamerican ceremonial fans often paired a hard-stone handle like this one with a broad display of feathers, so a small, cool, heavy carving anchored a large, light, iridescent surface — an intentional contrast between permanence and ephemerality prized by Mixtec lapidaries.

This handle makes me focus on the stone itself. It is a cylinder of pale milky green jade, polished to a silky sheen, but with brownish stains and an earthy patina from age. Look to the left: the snake head with a slightly open snout and an incised eye with a central dot. Along its back run five or six spirals with a central perforation, like stylized scales, where brown tones gather in the grooves. On the right the thicker end with two incised rings works as a stop. I wonder how it was carved without metal tools and how to clean it without erasing its history.

For me this snake is a small celestial cycle in stone. It is a horizontal cylindrical handle photographed against a dark gray background, carved in pale green jade linked to water and fertility in Mesoamerica. Its elongated body recalls a constellation arching across the night sky. The concentric circles with a central dot along its back remind me of orbit diagrams or stars plotted on an old map. Although its exact function as a possible fan handle is uncertain, between 900 and 1519 CE, its form suggests continuous movement, like a serpent that moves forward and returns.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a sleepy snake that turned into a little stick to hold a fan. It is long, light green like lime ice cream with little brown spots, and it shines a bit. On the left side it has a tiny head with its mouth open as if it wants to give a small bite and a round eye with a dot in the middle. On its back it has five or six little snail shapes that are its scales with a tiny hole. On the other side it is a bit chubbier with two lines like a bracelet. If you held it, it would surely feel cool and smooth from the polished jade.
