A thin, upright stone slab stands slightly angled against a smooth background that fades from near-black at the top to pale gray below. Its outline is irregular: fairly straight and thick on the right, uneven at the upper right corner, and narrowing toward a small flat base that casts a soft shadow. The surface is matte, granular, and weathered, in reddish browns spread unevenly over the gray stone, with worn edges and small losses. Almost the entire face is filled by a figure in strict profile, seated or crouching and facing right, carved in low relief with incised lines. The figure wears a tall, layered headdress with parallel bands, a band across the forehead, and a large circular earflare. The eye is a closed oval, the nose projects forward, and the mouth is slightly open. One bent arm reaches toward the torso, the hand rendered with long, separate fingers. Belts, bands, and geometric folds animate the lower body. Several pierced openings — dark, cleanly shaped holes beside the face, under the hand, and between the legs — let the background show through and separate the limbs. The carving feels dense and compact, with almost no empty surface left undecorated.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the outer silhouette, then let your eye enter through the empty openings around the face and hand. Notice how the void is not damage: it outlines the nose, arm, and legs. Finally, look for faint traces of red over the gray stone and the small break at the upper right edge.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is an unknown maker's hacha with openwork, dated 600–1000, linked to El Tajín, Veracruz, Mexico, and carved in gray volcanic stone with red pigment. It belongs to the Art of the Americas department at the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Gruener. In general terms, thin stone hachas from Classic-period Veracruz are usually associated with the Mesoamerican ballgame and its ceremonial regalia, although their exact use is not known and was probably symbolic rather than utilitarian.

Pertenece al departamento Art of the Americas del Cleveland Museum of Art y fue donada por Mr. and Mrs. James C. Gruener.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite its name — hacha means axe in Spanish — a piece this thin, with pierced openings, would be too fragile to cut anything; the name comes only from its general shape.

When I look at this plaque I focus on its material and what time has left behind. It is thin, matte gray volcanic stone with uneven patches of reddish pigment. The edges are worn and there are small losses, especially along the irregular outline. I am struck by how crisp the relief remains despite the openwork holes that reveal the background and weaken the structure. The profile figure, with its stepped headdress and large circular ear spool, shows fine incised lines that still hold traces of reddish tone.

I look for patterns and here everything is compact geometry. The strict profile figure fills almost the entire vertical plaque, designed to leave almost no empty space. The tall headdress with parallel bands reminds me of levels or steps facing the horizon. The dark openwork voids near the face, under the long-fingered hand and between the legs work like cutouts that define the silhouette against the background. It makes me think about how these people watched the sky and marked order with precise shapes, just as we trace constellations in the darkness.

This stone looks like a giant card with a person drawn in profile. She is sitting or crouching and looking to the right wearing a super tall hat with little stripes. She has a huge round earring like a donut and a hand with long spread-out fingers. The coolest part is the little holes that go right through the stone so you can see behind it. It is gray with reddish brown spots and looks rough and really old, as if it was used a lot a very long time ago.
