What you would seeLo que verías
A black-and-white engraving in horizontal format, dominated by a vast, theatrical sky. In the immediate foreground at lower left, a hatted shepherd sits on rocks playing a flute beside his dog, surrounded by about twenty sheep grazing, drinking or resting in a grassy hollow. Two tall, slender trees with intertwined trunks and full leafy crowns frame the scene on the left; to the right, a winding stream catches the light. The middle ground opens onto a broad valley with small groves, a wooden footbridge, cultivated fields and a meandering river. In the distance, a village with thatched-roof houses, a church with a bulbous belfry on the left and a distant spire at center, is illuminated by a striking sunbeam piercing the clouds. The sky occupies more than half the composition: dark, dense clouds rendered with dense cross-hatching part to let luminous rays break through, lighting the horizon with strong tenebrist contrast. Along the bottom margin runs a Latin dedication with the names of the painter and engraver. Exquisitely fine lines, varied textures and subtle gradations from deep black to bright white create depth, drama and a mood that is at once pastoral and sublime.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Let the dramatic sky hold your attention first, then follow the central beam of light down to the distant horizon before settling on the tiny shepherd at lower left. Notice how countless fine lines alone create light, shadow and texture, and how the small human presence gives scale to the vast landscape.
ContextContexto
Dated 1638, this print is credited by the Cleveland Museum of Art to Flemish engraver Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert after a painting by Peter Paul Rubens, published by Gillis Hendricx. It is an engraving on copper that reproduces one of Rubens painted landscapes. Bolswert, a regular collaborator of Rubens who built on techniques established by Lucas Emil Vorsterman, covered every inch of the plate with a dense network of cross-hatching to achieve painterly effects and dramatic tenebrist light and dark, seeking to hide individual engraved lines in favor of an atmosphere akin to painting. The work belongs to Flemish Baroque culture and is part of the Prints department, Gift of Louise S. Richards.

Curious detailDato curioso
To mimic Rubens brushwork, Bolswert covered the entire copper plate with disciplined networks of crossed lines, so dense that the eye reads clouds, water and foliage as if painted rather than engraved.

I focus on how Bolswert covered the entire copper plate with a dense network of cross-hatched lines. That mesh creates the theatrical sky and the tenebrist contrast between the dark clouds and the rays lighting the village in the background. Notice in the foreground the hatted shepherd playing the flute, his dog and about twenty sheep: every texture, from the wool to the bark of the two intertwined trees, is made with ultra-fine burin strokes gradating from black to white. An engraving from 1638 designed to hide the individual mark and look like painting.

What captivates me most is the sky that takes up more than half of the horizontal print. Dense clouds worked with cross-hatching open like a curtain to let beams of light bathe the valley, the winding stream and the church with its bulbous bell tower. It feels almost meteorological, light breaking through the storm. Below, everything is pastoral calm: the shepherd with his flute, sheep drinking and the wooden bridge. That tension between celestial drama and earthly stillness is pure Flemish Baroque.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
There are so many little sheep! I count about twenty, some eating grass, some drinking from the stream and some lying down to rest. On a rock sits the shepherd with his hat playing the flute and next to him his little dog watching over him. I like the two tall trees that look like they are hugging and the stream that shines. In the distance you can see a small village with thatched houses and two tiny churches. Above, the sky looks angry with beams of light that look like they are from a movie.
