What you would seeLo que verías
At the center, against a plain white background, sits a low, wide sugar bowl, photographed from the front and slightly above. Its bright silver body is shaped like a cup that narrows toward a small circular foot. The lower section is divided into vertical rectangular panels with a satin surface, subtle traces of handwork, and soft reflections. Above them, a dense band of relief encircles the bowl, resembling clusters of fruit, leaves, or rounded flowers; its irregular texture looks almost sculptural. A smooth strip leads up to the oval mouth. The edge extends into a broad horizontal plate with angular ends and small vegetal motifs engraved or embossed on its surface. On each side, a curved handle of nearly black ebony rises from the lower body and supports the plate; its contrast with the silver is the strongest visual element. At each upper end sits a moonstone cabochon, round, milky, and semitranslucent, mounted like a small luminous button. The light is diffuse, without harsh shadows; inside the mouth one can see hammered reflections and the blurred repetition of the relief. The piece seems small and manageable, made to be lifted with both hands.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the long horizontal line of the rim and let your eye travel from one moonstone to the other. Then move down: contrast the smooth, paneled base with the dense band of relief above it. The two black handles turn a domestic bowl into a small, almost ceremonial object.
ContextContexto
This sugar bowl, dated c. 1910, was made by Louis Rorimer (American, 1872–1939) and the Rokesley Shop in Cleveland, Ohio, from silver, moonstones, and ebony. According to the source, it belonged to a tea and coffee service designed for production by the Rokesley Shop, a collaborative group working at Rorimer's studio. The group reacted against industrial mass production and emphasized inventive design in finely crafted objects. It is therefore safely understood within the early twentieth-century climate that valued careful handwork, although the source does not state who used this particular piece or how many examples were produced.

Curious detailDato curioso
The pale moonstones do not decorate the interior or the most visible band: they sit, like small lids or buttons, exactly at the two ends of the horizontal rim, above where the ebony handles arrive.

If you look closely at the relief around the bowl you will see the handmade quality the Rokesley Shop defended around 1910. The satin-finished panels below contrast with the raised band of fruits and leaves in repoussé, and above the silver becomes smooth and polished again. I love the contrast between the cool shine of the silver body and the warm darkness of the almost black ebony handles, finished with two milky moonstones that seem to hold light. It is a small piece, made to be lifted with two hands, and every hammered mark tells its handmade story.

What draws me most are those two moonstones at the ends, like two tiny full moons set on a silver sky. This sugar bowl from around 1910 feels like a small portable cosmos: the silver body reflects diffused light like dawn light, and the black ebony of the handles is the deep night that holds it up. The relief of fruits and leaves below reminds me of lunar craters and mountains, bumpy and full of soft shadows. Louis Rorimer and his workshop in Cleveland wanted to move away from industry and return to craft, and here they managed to trap a little moonlight in an everyday object.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a little treasure boat for sugar. It is short and chubby, all shiny like a mirror where you can see your funny reflection. At the bottom it has dull stripes and in the middle a crown of plump grapes and little leaves you want to touch. The prettiest part are its two black ebony ears, very dark, and at each tip a milky marble that shines like a moon. I imagine if you lift it with both hands the sugar inside rattles like sweet sand. Louis Rorimer made it more than a hundred years ago in Cleveland for a tea set, but I would use it to keep sweet secrets.
