What you would seeLo que verías

It is a horizontal oil sketch painted with broad, rapid, visibly loaded brushstrokes that leave streaks, ridges, and small flashes of unmixed color. In the center, a group of women works bent over in a field. The closest figure, wearing a pale cap, a blue shawl, and a long dark dress, reaches one arm toward the ground; behind her are two upright or half-hidden companions, one with a reddish cap and another with a gray-blue head covering and a brown garment. A teal shape suggests yet another bent body, partly absorbed into the group. To the right, separated by an empty stretch of earth, a lone woman crouches in tan and ocher clothing, also facing downward. Their faces are barely indicated, blurred by shadow and shorthand brushwork. The left side rises into a dark mound of vegetation in browns, olive greens, brick reds, and touches of turquoise. The ground in the foreground is a dense mixture of russet, ocher, and dark green, with pale dabs that may suggest cloth, stones, or gathered produce. In the background, a flat field extends beneath a pale, almost blank sky, with two dark, haystack-like forms on the horizon. The overall effect is earthy, compact, and sketchlike rather than finely finished.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the bent silhouettes in the center and notice how little facial detail they are given. Then look for the small touches of blue, white, and red on their head coverings, which separate one body from another. Finally, compare this compact group with the solitary woman on the right: the distance between them changes a shared task into a scene of sustained, repetitive effort.

ContextContexto

Women Working in a Field (1867) is an oil-on-wood sketch by the American artist Winslow Homer (1836–1910), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to the museum, Homer sailed from Boston in December 1866 for a year of study in France. He worked mainly in Paris and in the rural village of Cernay-la-Ville, and it was probably there that he painted this sketch. The source notes that he had known French painting since the early 1850s, particularly the outdoor approach of the Barbizon school. The specific task the women are performing is not identified.

Curious detailDato curioso

A striking visual observation: although the title emphasizes the women, their faces are barely described; the painting identifies them above all through bent postures, headscarves, and the rhythm of their hands toward the ground.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does the painting communicate by showing postures and gestures while withholding the women's faces and individual features?¿Qué comunica la pintura al mostrar posturas y gestos, pero reservar los rostros y los rasgos individuales de las mujeres?
  2. How does the separation between the central group and the woman on the right affect your reading of the work?¿Cómo cambia la lectura del trabajo la separación entre el grupo central y la mujer de la derecha?
  3. Does the loose, unfinished brushwork make the labor feel more immediate, or does it distance us from the workers?¿La pincelada suelta e inacabada vuelve la labor más inmediata o nos aleja de quienes la realizan?

I focus on how this sketch on wood is made. The brushwork is broad and quick, with thick, visible paint that leaves ridges and texture, almost as if the color was dragged without blending. I notice the pale patches in the foreground and the turquoise flicks among the browns and olive greens of the mound. Faces are barely suggested, because what matters here is the gesture of labor, not detail. It feels like a sketch, not a finished painting, and every abbreviated stroke shows it.

I look at the horizon and notice how flat the field is under that pale, almost empty sky. Only two dark shapes like haystacks break the distant line. The rest is earth in reddish, ochre and dark green tones. The central group of bent women and the lone figure to the right look small against that expanse. It is a horizontal composition where the open sky makes human labor feel tiny and quiet, like a small presence under a vast, light-filled dome.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see some ladies working bent over the ground and I can barely see their faces. One has a light-colored cap and a pretty blue shawl, another has a reddish cap and another a gray-blue scarf. On the right there is another lady alone in ochre clothes, also crouching. The ground has lots of colors like brown, red and green, with light little spots that look like pebbles. In the back there is a dark little hill and the sky looks pale and empty.
