The Four SeasonsLas cuatro estaciones

Kano Tan’yū (Japanese, 1602–1674) · 1668 · Japan, Edo period (1615–1868)

pair of six-panel folding screens, ink and slight color on paper

What you would seeLo que verías

The work is shown as two long horizontal folding screens, one above the other, each divided into six vertical panels bordered by a muted blue-green patterned fabric. Most of the surface is aged, beige paper left almost empty, like misty water or sky, with soft brown stains and very pale ink washes. In the upper screen, on the right, rocky cliffs, twisted pines and temple-like buildings with dark roofs emerge from the fog; a rock pierced by a round hole and a leaning pine anchor the composition. Toward the center and left, the landscape dissolves into distant islands, low mountains, a small rocky islet with a pagoda and tiny boats: a sailboat and several rowboats barely interrupt the expanse. In the lower screen the weight shifts to the left, where steep, pale, snow-like mountains, a waterfall, bare or snow-covered trees, rocks and buildings crowd together, with minute figures near the water. To the right, the scene opens again into calm water, small boats, shoreline houses and hazy hills. The drawing is fine and economical, in black and gray ink with almost imperceptible color. Small vertical inscriptions and red seals appear at the outer edges. The overall scale feels vast, but it is built from very small gestures and details.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the large empty areas and let your eye travel slowly, as if crossing water. Then look for the tiny boats and buildings half-hidden by mist. A small detail — a bent pine, a pagoda, a sail — changes the scale of everything: the void stops being empty and becomes distance, air and time passing.

ContextContexto

The Four Seasons (1668) is a pair of six-panel folding screens in ink and slight color on paper by Kano Tan'yū (1602–1674), from Japan's Edo period. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Tan'yū trained in the Kano family studio; his grandfather Eitoku had been the most sought-after painter of the Momoyama period. Summoned to Edo in 1617, Tan'yū became an official painter in the new capital and later supervised large mural compositions for prestigious residences and castles. The source presents him as a teacher, connoisseur and hugely prolific artist. It is not stated where this pair was originally installed.

Curious detailDato curioso

Tan'yū was summoned to Edo in 1617, when — based on his 1602 birth date — he was only about fifteen years old, and he went on to produce an oeuvre that, together with thousands of surviving sketches, surpasses that of any of his contemporaries, according to the source.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the passage of the seasons change when it is told mostly through emptiness, mist and water rather than through obvious symbols?¿Cómo cambia el paso de las estaciones cuando se cuenta sobre todo con vacíos, niebla y agua, y no con símbolos evidentes?
  2. What experience of travel do these screens create: crossing a real landscape, remembering one, or dreaming it?¿Qué experiencia de viaje crean estos biombos: cruzar un paisaje real, recordarlo o soñarlo?
  3. Why might an official painter choose such restraint and silence for a large-scale, prestigious format?¿Por qué un pintor oficial elegiría tanta contención y silencio para un formato grande y prestigioso?

From my craft I first look at the aged beige paper of these two horizontal six-panel screens. I notice how Kano Tan'yū leaves huge empty areas suggesting mist and water, concentrating black and grey ink in very economical strokes. I pause on the border of patterned fabric in muted bluish green that frames everything. The work is ink and light color on paper from 1668, and it feels fragile. I read the small vertical inscriptions and red seals at the edges as marks of authorship that I must preserve.

I am drawn to how this pair of screens organizes space like a night sky with constellations. The upper screen clusters on the right crags, twisted pines, temples with dark roofs and that rock with a round hole like a moon. The lower one concentrates on the left pale mountains, a waterfall and buildings. In both, the center and opposite sides dissolve into water, mist, distant islands, small boats and a tiny sailboat. The beige emptiness dominates, and the details work like stars guiding the eye across a serene vastness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant puzzle with two long strips, each with six parts. Most of it is empty, beige colored, like water with fog. If you get close you find little things: crooked pines, a stone with a little round hole, temples, a pagoda on a tiny island, a waterfall and boats so small you can barely see them. I like that on one side everything is crowded and on the other there is almost nothing. At the top and bottom there are little vertical writings and little red stamps that look like stickers.
