A Sage with Tiger — Kano Tan’yū, 1661Un sabio con tigre — Kano Tan’yū, 1661
Kano Tan’yū (Japanese, 1602–1674) · 1661 · Japan, Edo period (1615–1868)
One of a triptych of hanging scrolls; ink and slight color on silk
What you would seeLo que verías
This is a tall, narrow hanging scroll. The upper half is almost entirely empty: a warm beige silk ground, softly uneven and darkened at the edges, with only the small top of a staff breaking the quiet. Below, an elderly sage stands slightly off-center, bald, with wispy hair at the sides, sparse facial hair, half-closed eyes, and a bowed, weary expression. He leans on a tall, thin staff held in his right hand; its upper end is twisted and gnarled. His long, loose robe falls in broad washes of pale gray, cream, and dark ink, pooling around his feet and thin sandals. Behind him, a tiger emerges on the left with its large head lowered, ears back, pale fur marked with black stripes, and one broad paw forward. On the right, another paw and the long, spotted, curving tail complete the animal’s body, mostly hidden by the man. At the lower right are vertical black calligraphy and a small reddish seal. The palette is restrained: beige, ivory, soft grays, and black ink. There is no landscape or background detail; the worn silk texture and the scroll’s patterned mounting borders frame the spare, intimate scene.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the long empty stretch of silk above the figure, then let your eyes travel down the vertical line of the staff to the sage’s bowed face. Notice how the tiger is not in front of him, but surrounds him. The head to the left and the spotted tail to the right complete the beast behind his robe and change a portrait into a scene of companionship.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this work was painted in 1661 by Kano Tan’yū (1602–1674), one of the leading painters of Japan’s Edo period (1615–1868). It is one of a triptych of hanging scrolls, made with ink and slight color on silk, and is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Tan’yū headed the Kano school, closely associated with the Tokugawa shogunate’s official painting. The source does not name the sage, so his specific identity is not known here. In East Asian Buddhist and ascetic imagery, a holy man accompanied by a tiger often suggests spiritual discipline capable of coexisting with, or taming, wild nature.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail is that the tiger has no complete, continuous body: most of it is hidden behind the sage. We piece it together from the head on the left, a massive paw, part of a hind leg, and the long spotted tail curling on the right.

What moves me most is the silk. That warm beige, irregular and darkened at the edges, speaks of centuries. I look at how the ink pools in washes of pale grey and black on the loose robe and how the patterned borders of the mounting frame the emptiness of the upper half. The work is ink and light color on silk, in the format of a tall narrow hanging scroll, and the fragility of the support is evident. Every stain and wear mark reminds us that this is a living object that has survived since 1661.

I am fascinated by the emptiness. The upper half is almost empty, interrupted only by the twisted knotty tip of the staff, like a clear sky before dawn. Below, the old sage and the tiger form an intimate constellation. The contrast between the ivory silk background and the dark ink of the tiger stripes and the robe makes me think of light and shadow, of the visible and the hidden. There is no detailed landscape, and that minimalism focuses all attention on the silent companionship between human and animal.

The old man looks very tired, with his bald head and tiny beard, leaning on his super long staff. I find it sweet how his big robe covers him down to his feet with thin sandals. And behind him comes his tiger friend hiding, you can only see its lowered head with ears back, one wide paw and its long curved spotted tail. It looks like it is playing hide and seek behind the grandpa. I like that almost all the drawing is empty and that at the bottom there are little black vertical letters and a tiny red seal.
