What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal photograph in deep sepia, brown, and near-black tones shows a stepped waterfall at the center of a shaded hollow. The water falls in two main uneven tiers over dark, horizontally layered rock ledges, widening and softening as it descends. Because of the long exposure, the current looks like a pale, silky veil rather than separate drops; where it meets the pool below, it dissolves into foam and a broad, luminous reflection. To the left of the main fall, a much thinner trickle slips down the rock face. The pool occupies the lower middle ground and appears almost black, mirroring the brightness above. In the immediate foreground, a scattering of light stones and gravel forms a rough shore: angular, pitted rocks of different sizes catch the light and provide the sharpest textures in the image. Dark rock walls enclose both sides, while dense trees, shrubs, and climbing leaves crowd the upper half, especially at right, where tiny leaves are picked out against shadow. Diffused daylight enters from above, brightest on the water and treetops, leaving the corners in deep shade. There are no people, animals, or buildings; the scale is conveyed only by rocks, vegetation, and falling water.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the bright waterfall at the center, then let your eyes descend to its reflection in the pool. Next, compare the soft texture of the water with the sharp rocks in the foreground. Notice the thin trickle on the left: it changes the scene from a portrait of a single waterfall into a record of a whole damp, layered place.
ContextContexto
Vale of Neath was made in 1854 by G. B. Gething, a British photographer active in the 1850s, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds the work through the John L. Severance Fund. It is an albumen print made from a dry collodion negative, a process of early photography. The title names the Vale of Neath, but the exact waterfall and its precise location are not identified in the source record; therefore, it is not known whether it shows a particular named fall. In the 1850s, landscape photography required lengthy exposures and careful handling of materials outdoors.

Curious detailDato curioso
Albumen paper was coated with egg white, which helped give the photographic surface its smoothness and sheen.

I linger on how this 1854 albumen print by G. B. Gething, made from a dry collodion negative, still holds its deep browns and sepia tones. The long exposure turns the water into a smooth, continuous veil instead of drops, revealing the care needed with early materials outdoors. I notice the contrast between the soft brightness of the waterfall and the sharp, rough texture of the stones in the foreground. It is a work that breathes technical patience and quiet contemplation.

This image feels like watching the sky with a long exposure: light builds up little by little. Here the stepped waterfall at the center becomes a silky veil because of the time the early photographic material needed to capture it, while the lower pool stays almost black, like a dark mirror. I love how soft light comes from above and brightens the water and treetops, while the rocky walls remain in shadow. With no people or buildings, only rocks, plants and water hint at the scale.

The water looks like silk! The big waterfall drops in two steps and looks white and soft, like a veil, and next to it a tiny thin stream slides down the rock. Down below there is a dark pool that shines like a mirror. In front there are lots of light-colored rough little stones in different sizes. Up top there are many trees and tiny leaves letting light through. I like that there is nobody there, just quiet nature and water I can imagine splashing.
