What you would seeLo que verías

A brisé folding fan fully opened in an arched shape, centered against a neutral gray background. It is composed of narrow ivory sticks pierced with openwork and painted, joined at the base by a metal pin set with a dark stone and a bright highlight. The upper border shows ivory foliage openwork edged with gilding and a turquoise band with small motifs. The central painted zone depicts a sunlit harbor: in the foreground on a stone quay, an elegant couple — she in a long vermilion skirt and blue bodice with a red headdress, he in a red coat — stands talking; nearby a kneeling man and a seated figure with trunks, and additional figures in blue, red and brown dresses. In the background, a pale blue sea with sailing ships under full sails, stone buildings, light mountains and a soft clouded sky. Dominant colors are watery blue, vermilion red, golden ochre and ivory. The wider lower central stick holds a small painted medallion with two figures in red cloaks. The polished sheen of ivory, the fineness of miniature painting and the slight wear of gilding along the edges are visible, at the scale of a delicate, highly ornamented hand-held object.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the center of the quay with the couple in red and blue, then follow the eye outward to the ships and pale mountains to grasp the depth. Notice the pierced ivory along the top edge and the tiny fan painted inside the fan on the lower central stick, which mirrors the main scene.

ContextContexto

The Cleveland Museum of Art records the work as Brise Fan by an unknown maker, dated ca. 1725 and probably attributed to Italy, 18th century, made of ivory with a metal pin. It is housed in Decorative Art and Design. Brisé fans, made only of sticks without a fabric leaf, were fashionable luxury accessories in Europe from the late 17th century onward. The painted harbor with fashionably dressed figures is typical of narrative decoration on such fans. No specific workshop or patron is documented, and the cultural attribution to Italy is given as uncertain in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

In a brisé fan each stick is a rigid ivory or bone slat, and the picture is painted continuously across all the sticks, so the complete image only appears when the fan is fully open.

I focus on the material and its making. I see narrow sticks of pierced, painted and polished ivory, joined by a metal rivet with a dark stone. The upper edge combines vegetal openwork in ivory tone, gilded lines with slight wear and a turquoise band. At the center, miniature painting tells of a harbor in full daylight: stone quay, couple with red skirt and blue bodice and red coat, trunks, sailing ships on pale blue sea and pale mountains. It is a delicate bright hand object, probably from Italy around 1725, with attribution still uncertain.

I am drawn to the light of this painted harbor. It is full daylight, sky with soft clouds and pale blue sea where sailing ships with open sails stand out. I picture high sun lighting the stone pier and vivid colors: vermilion red, watery blue, golden ochre and ivory. In the background, stone buildings and pale mountains under an open horizon. In the foreground, the elegant couple and other figures with trunks seem to await a voyage. The brisé fan, photographed open in an arch, turns that daylight into a small portable theater of horizon and sailing.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

What a pretty little fan! It looks like an arch made of ivory sticks with lacy cutouts and gold on top and a little turquoise stripe. In the middle there is a harbor with light blue sea and sailboats. On the pier there is a lady with a long red skirt and blue top and a man in red, and other people with trunks as if they are going to travel. At the bottom there is a wider stick with a small medallion of two people with red capes. It shines a lot and looks delicate, like an elegant toy to carry in your hand.
