What you would seeLo que verías

A single, very tall and slender vase stands centered against a dark studio background that fades from almost black at the top to soft gray behind the object. It occupies nearly the full height of the image and is shown frontally, without flowers, people or other objects to indicate its real scale. The body rises from a slightly flared, almost square base, narrows into a long vertical shaft and widens again near the top into an irregular, crown-like mouth. The surface is glossy and mottled, with a crystalline glaze in sage green, gray-green, pale beige and streaks of dark blue-gray running lengthwise, like mineral veining or damp stone. Light catches the raised relief, leaving the recesses in shadow. At the top, curved handles sweep upward and inward like horns, wings or plant tendrils, pierced by small oval openings. Below them, thinner loop handles hang along the sides, and the shaft is decorated with elongated, flame-like leaves, small rounded buds and, near the base on the front, a clear spiral scroll. Nothing is strictly symmetrical: edges twist, openings vary and the ornament seems to grow out of the clay rather than sit on top of it.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the top, where the handles flare like horns or antennae, then let your eye travel down the long, uninterrupted shaft. On the way back up, notice how the small loops, buds and spirals are not applied decoration but continuations of the body itself. That fusion of structure and ornament is what changes the vase from a container into a miniature building.

ContextContexto

This vase was made in 1903 by the Sèvres Porcelain Factory to a design by French architect Hector Guimard (1867–1942). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, its name refers to the Rue des Binelles in Sèvres, near Paris, where Guimard had designed the Castel Henriette in 1899, and its forms recall details of that house. Made of stoneware with a crystalline glaze, it is a clear example of Art Nouveau, recognizable in its asymmetry and flowing, curvilinear lines. The Sèvres Manufactory, founded in the mid-18th century and still operating, produced only five examples of this model.

Curious detailDato curioso

Only five examples of the Vase des Binelles were made, so each surviving piece is exceptionally rare for a factory-produced ceramic.

I focus on the surface, because that is where the technical feat lies. It is stoneware with a shiny, mottled crystalline glaze in sage greens, grayish green, pale beige and bluish gray veins that run like damp stone. Notice how light highlights the reliefs and leaves shadows in the recesses: the elongated flame-like leaves, the small rounded buds and that spiral near the base that seems to sprout from the clay itself. The openwork upper handles curve like tendrils and contrast with the thin loop handles below. Everything is asymmetrical and alive.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this vase is a vertical form reaching for the sky. It rises from an almost square base, stretches into a long shaft and opens at the top into an irregular mouth like a crown. It stands alone against a dark background fading from near black to soft gray, with nothing to reveal its true scale. It reminds me of a stem or a column growing: below the strong spiral, in the middle leaves and buds, above horns curving inward. That asymmetry and those flowing lines are pure art nouveau, an attempt to capture the movement of nature.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic vase that grew by itself. It is super tall and skinny, with a little almost square base and a wonky mouth on top like a crown. It is green and gray with shiny speckles, like wet stone. It has little horns on top with oval holes and lower down little handles like ribbons. It also has long little leaves and a curly tail near the bottom. Nothing is even, everything is a bit twisted and that makes it fun, as if the little plants sprouted from the clay to hug it.

It is not a large number, you can count it on one hand and it is mentioned in the production history.

  2. #2

Facing the piece, look near the base at the center: what relief form stands out as a coiled spiral?

    HintPista

Look just above the squarish base, on the front of the shaft, it is a small curved detail.

  3. #3

At the top, on the large handles that rise like horns, what shape are the openwork holes?

    HintPista

They are elongated rounded perforations on the upper handles, not perfect circles or squares.
