What you would seeLo que verías

This is a vertical print on aged beige paper, with wide margins, a visibly fibrous texture, and slightly irregular edges. At the center rises a tall, leafy plant, far larger than the tiny landscape behind it, which gives it a monumental presence. Its slender stems branch upward and outward, bearing lance-shaped leaves in pairs: some dark green, others pale green or almost gray, with fine black veining. Near the top are two open flowers with ochre petals and black centers, along with small buds and young shoots of very narrow leaves. The base rests on an earthen mound shaded with brown and beige cross-hatching. At lower left, an overturned gray pot beside another small plant suggests a neglected or newly transplanted garden. At lower right, a low pink brick wall, broken at one end, holds a grayish plaque inscribed in capitals: “CISTUS MINOR ROSMARINI-FOLIUS.” Behind it unfolds a minimal landscape of ochre hills, pale water, and, at upper right, a distant building with a red roof and tiny cypresses. The light is flat and decorative, typical of a hand-colored etching; greens, ochres, muted pinks, and the cream of the paper predominate. A small notation, almost lost, appears in the upper right corner.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two golden flowers at the top, then follow the branching stems down to the mound. Notice how the plant dwarfs everything around it. The overturned pot and the broken brick wall turn a botanical plate into a small, staged scene.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this print is by the Dutch artist Abraham Munting (1626–1683), dates from around 1651–83, and was made in the Netherlands using etching hand-colored with watercolor. It belongs to the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, which credits it as a gift of John C. Bonebrake in honor of Louise S. Richards. The Latin inscription identifies the subject, in the botanical naming of the period, as a smaller cistus with rosemary-like leaves. In seventeenth-century Europe, plates like this combined scientific description with decorative composition, though the exact circumstances of this impression are not recorded in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

Because the color was applied by hand in watercolor over the etched lines, no two impressions of the same print are exactly alike: the greens and ochres could vary slightly from copy to copy.

  1. Why present a plant at such a monumental scale compared with the landscape and building behind it?¿Por qué presentar una planta a una escala tan monumental frente al paisaje y al edificio del fondo?
  2. What role do the overturned pot and broken wall play: scientific information, decoration, or storytelling?¿Qué papel juegan la maceta volcada y el muro roto: información científica, adorno o relato?
  3. How does hand coloring change the way we read a print originally designed in black lines?¿Cómo cambia la acuarela aplicada a mano nuestra lectura de un grabado pensado primero en líneas negras?

If you look closely you will see what time has left on the paper, that aged beige tone with fibrous texture and slightly irregular edges, with crosshatched brown shading on the earthy mound. This etching was hand-colored with watercolor, so the dark and pale greens of the paired lance-shaped leaves are not flat and the two ochre flowers with black centers show soft variations. I notice how pigment settles over the fine black veins and how the pink brick wall and the grayish plaque still hold their muted color after centuries.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

It is not the sky, but this print is also a map to find your way. The plant dominates the center like a monumental constellation, much larger than the tiny background landscape with its ochre hills, pale water and the distant building with a red roof and cypresses on the right. The two open flowers at the top work like guide stars and the small buds are like faint bodies yet to shine. The light is flat and decorative and everything feels ordered, as if the maker wanted to chart the plant universe with quiet precision.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This plant is huge, like a magic tree! Its thin stems spread everywhere with little leaves, some dark green and some pale, and at the top there are two ochre flowers with a pretty black center. Down below there is a gray flowerpot tipped over, poor thing, and a pink little wall broken on one side, as if someone left it unfinished. I like to imagine the tiny plant next to it wants to grow just as tall and that the faraway building with the red roof is its little house.

  1. #1

Looking carefully at the center of the print, how many fully open flowers with ochre petals and a black center can you count at the top of the plant?

    HintPista

Look at the top where the stems end: not the buds, but the large open blooms.

  2. #2

In the lower part of the image, what gray garden-related object appears tipped over next to the small plant, to the left of the mound?

    HintPista

It is at the bottom left, a container that usually holds soil and plants.

  3. #3

At the bottom right there is a low wall in a distinctive pinkish color, what material is that little wall that holds the plaque with the inscription in capital letters?

    HintPista

Notice the muted pink tone and the broken end of the wall, it looks made of small rectangular blocks.
