What you would seeLo que verías

This sepia-toned panoramic photogravure shows a vast open prairie under a broad, luminous sky. Across the middle ground and stretching to the horizon, dozens of light-colored conical tipis are arranged in a loose but dense encampment; most appear plain, a few show darkened bases, and one near the center has distinct vertical stripes. The foreground is an expansive field of short grass and mottled earth, with uneven, textured patches of darker vegetation and a single white horse grazing alone on the left. In the distance, low rolling hills close the view, with two sharper small peaks on the far left. The sky takes up more than half the image, filled with soft, diffused clouds that add depth. The light is even and daylight, with faint shadows. The paper has a creamy, deckled edge, with the caption SUN DANCE ENCAMPMENT - PIEGAN at lower left, a central copyright line From Copyright Photograph 1900 by E.S. Curtis, and the engraver credit at lower right. The overall effect conveys immensity and a sense of temporary community order.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Take in the full horizon first to feel the scale of the encampment against the sky. Then locate the striped tipi near the center and the lone white horse in the foreground for human scale. Finally notice the distant hills and the rhythm of repeated light triangles organizing the plain.

Curious detailDato curioso

Edward Curtis created more than 40,000 photographs for The North American Indian, published in 20 volumes between 1907 and 1930, and his portfolio photogravures were printed on handmade paper, which gives this plate its warm tone and uneven edge.

What holds my attention is the sepia tone of the photogravure and the irregular cream paper edge, so characteristic of Curtis Portfolio VI plate 192 from 1900. I look at the even dark ink, the dark bands at the base of some light canvas tipis and the white horse on the left over the mottled grassland. Below I read the caption SUN DANCE ENCAMPMENT - PIEGAN, the photo credit in the center and the engraver credit on the right.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see a vast plain under a sky that fills more than half the image, with soft clouds and even daylight. In the distance there are low hills and two pointed elevations at the far left that help me get oriented. The conical tipis lined up to the horizon remind me of constellations arranged on the ground. I imagine what that camp would look like at night, under the open sky of the Great Plains with no light pollution.

So many tipis! It looks like a whole village of little white pointy houses lined up as far as you can see. The grass is short and spotty and there is a lone white horse on the left, as if it is taking a walk. The sky is huge and has fluffy clouds. I like to count the little houses and imagine that all the Piegan people were there together for their Sun Dance celebration.
