What you would seeLo que verías
The photograph shows, from directly above and filling almost the entire frame, the back of a circular bronze mirror resting on a plain gray surface. The composition is strongly concentric: at the center rises a worn, rounded knob, pale gray with small dark perforations at its sides, surrounded by narrow rings. Around it, four bulky mythical animals in high relief appear to move in a circle among curling forms that suggest clouds, manes, and long tails. Their bodies are dark, with incised stripes marking fur, limbs, and wings. Several concentric bands separate the central scene from the rim: fine teeth, repeated lines, and a wide band with Chinese characters, followed by another decorated border. The bronze is nearly black and dark gray, with greenish and whitish corrosion, especially on the knob and along the irregular outer edge. Light from above creates bright highlights on the relief and a soft, dense shadow at the lower right. The surface looks rough, pitted, and aged, contrasting with the smooth background. No hands, people, or scale reference appear, so its actual size cannot be judged from the image alone. Small breaks, deposits, and eroded characters become visible only on slow inspection.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the raised knob at the center, then move outward in circles: first the four creatures, then the bands of fine lines and the inscription. Notice how the animals seem to rotate around the center, and look for the pale corrosion that breaks up the dark, nearly symmetrical surface.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this bronze mirror was made in China during the Southern and Northern Dynasties period (386–589), dated more specifically between the early 400s and late 500s CE. Its author is unknown. The title identifies the four main creatures as bixie, mythical beasts in Chinese tradition. In ancient China, bronze mirrors usually had a highly polished reflective face and a decorated back like the one shown here. The central knob often served to hold a cord. The exact place of manufacture, owner, and original use of this example are not known from the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
The most decorated face of a Chinese bronze mirror was not the one used for looking at oneself: the opposite side was polished to produce the reflection, while the back concentrated the relief, the inscription, and the central knob.

What holds my attention is the surface. The bronze looks almost black and dark gray, rough and pitted, with greenish and whitish corrosion gathered on the central button and the uneven outer edge. I see the pale worn button with dark perforations, and around it four bixie in high relief moving in a circle among cloud-like swirls and long tails. The overhead light creates highlights on the relief that reveal each incised line of fur, but also the small breaks, deposits and worn characters on the outer band.

For me everything here is a circle inside a circle, like orbits. The central button is the point of origin and from there narrow rings spread outward to organize the space. Then come the four bixie, moving always in the same direction among coiled shapes that look like clouds. Further out there are concentric bands with fine denticulated lines, repeated strokes and a wide band with Chinese characters. That perfect geometry reminds me of an ancient sky map, although we do not know its original concrete use and there is no human scale to measure it.

It looks like a giant top made of old metal. In the middle it has a button like a little gray nose and around it four chubby little animals with legs, wings and long tails running in a circle without stopping. They are playing among curly little clouds. Everything is surrounded by many circles, like hoops, and one has little drawings that are Chinese letters but they are very worn. The metal looks black and green in places, rough with shiny spots where the light hits it. No one is holding it, it just floats on a gray background.
